More diagnostic indexes from general practice for some important forms of cancer
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 1990)A method of calculating positive predictive values (PPVs) and likelihood ralios (LRs) on the basis of Bayesian probabilities has been described previously. In the present article the method is applied to a sore which does not heal in relation to skin cancer, a lump in the breast in relation to female breast cancer, genital bleeding in relation to internal genital cancer in fernales and ... -

Factors affecting self-evaluated general health status and the use of professional health care services
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 1991)The idea of health has been given different meanings throughout history. The “Pippin perspective” introduced here contrasts the seemingly prevailing cultural climate of fascination and concern with personal health, uneasiness and “elevating health to a super value, a metaphor for all that is good in life” (1). What Pippin might help to illustrate is the reported historical trend toward a ... -
Diagnosis of cancer in general practice : a study of delay problems and warning signals of cancer, with implications for public cancer information and for cancerdiagnostic strategies in general practice
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 1991-01-26)Early diagnosis of cancer is beneficial to most cancer patients. This doctoral thesis is based on studies in general practice in Tromsø, Norway, during the years 1978-1985. General practitioners have a very important role in the work excluding or leading up to a cancer diagnosis. The studies deal with diagnostic delay, the value of symptoms, and with strategies for GP s to improve their cancer ... -
Aspects of breast cervical cancer screening
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 1992)The purpose of the thesis was to investigate aspects of breast cancer screening such as the feasibility, non-attendance and adverse effects of a general mammography screening program. A second objective was to examine whether risk factors for cervical neoplasia could be identified for potential utilization in a selective screening program for cervical cancer. -

The healthy faith : pregnancy outcome, risk of disease, cancer morbidity and mortality in Norwegian Seventh-Day Adventists
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 1992)The aim of the present study was to examine the association between being a Seventh-Day Adventist and risk factors for disease, pregnancy outcome, cancer incidence, site-specific mortality and total mortality in an unselected Seventh-Day Adventist population. -

Endothelin-1 stimulates human monocytes in vitro to release TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 1993-09-09)INCREASED plasma- and tissue levels of endothelin-1 (ET-1) during inflammatory diseases, have suggested a role of ET-1 in the pathophysiology of inflammatory reactions. The authors have studied the effect of ET-1 on cytokine release from monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages. ET-1 increased secretion of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Optimal ET-1 concentration ... -
Evening melatonin in January after changes in hours of habitual exercise during fall among youths living in the subarctic.
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 1994)Secretion of the hormone melatonin shows a circadian rhythm and is inhibited by light. Light therapy with phase shifting of the melatonin rhythm has been used as treatment of sleeping problems and seasonal affective disorders (SAD). Exercise has also been shown to suppress the melatonin secretion. In order to investigate the effect of increased level of habitual physical activity upon ... -
The TNF Receptors p55 and p75 Mediate Chemotaxis of PMN Induced by TNFα and a TNFα 36–62 Peptide
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 1994)The present study was performed to examine whether residues 36–62 of TNFα contain the chemotactic domain of TNFα, and whether the p55 and p75 TNF receptors are involved in TNFα induced chemotaxis. The chemotactic effect of TNFα on PMN was inhibited by the mAbs Hrt-7b and Utr-1, against the p55 and p75 TNF receptors, respectively. Both receptors may therefore be required for mediating the chemotactic ... -
Endothelin-1 Stimulates Monocytes in vitro to Release Chemotactic Activity Identified as Interleukin-8 and Monocyte Chemotactic Protein-1
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 1994)In the present study we examined whether endothelin-1 stimulation of human monocytes causes release of chemotactic factors. It was found that monocytes released neutrophil- and monocyte-chemotactic activity in a dose- and time-dependent manner in response to ET-1. ET-1 did not show any chemotactic activity by itself. NCA was detected in monocyte supernatants in response to ET-1 (0.01–100 nM) after ... -

Patterns and predictors of drug use : a pharmacoepidemiologic study, linking the analgesic drug prescription to a population health survey in Tromsø, Norway
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 1994)The purpose of the study may be summarized as follows: - What is the frequency of drug use in the population, frequency of analgesic drug use in general and particularly the use of controlled analgesics? - How will morbidity, demographic pattern and lifestyle characteristics influence this drug use, and which factors explain the observed differences in drug use?
