| dc.description.abstract | The research project “Road traffic crashes in Arkhangelsk, Russia in 2005-2010” is the basis for my PhD dissertation. It addresses traffic safety – a major public health concern in Russia. The dissertation describes recent trends and determinants of traffic safety in Arkhangelsk and will contribute a part of the evidence basis for planning local road safety measures in future. The Department of Community Medicine of the University of Tromsø initiated for the purposes of dissemination of the results in the study area, that the disputation will take place in Arkhangelsk. | dc.description.popularabstract | The doctoral project “Road traffic crashes in Arkhangelsk, Russia in 2005-2010” was performed in collaboration with Arkhangelsk road police. It started by investigating trends in the local road safety situation. The major identified trend was a reduction of pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes. In parallel, there was performed a study to assess reliability of the two key sources of traffic safety data in the area – the police and the healthcare sector. This study showed that the police data were more reliable in the study period. The third study was to explain the observed reduction in pedestrian-motor vehicle crashes. This reduction was found associated with local infrastructure interventions and national legislative measures. The doctoral studies were combined with teaching master-level course "Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion" at Arkhangelsk International School of Public Health. The fourth paper describes this experience and outlines a demand for knowledge of evidence-based injury prevention in Russia. | en |
