Getting Hamaker coefficients with an amplitude-modulation AFM in tapping mode
(Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2020-07)We demonstrate how to get Hamaker coefficients with an amplitude-modulation AFM operated in standard tapping mode. The Hamaker coefficient is a physical parameter that provides chemical information about the surface of samples. It is based or emerges from van der Waals forces. We use a Cypher scanning probe microscope from Asylum Research to demonstrate the method. The method is based on the research ... -
COVID-19: One world, one health

Foraging tactics in dynamic sea-ice habitats affect individual state in a long-ranging seabird
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-07-13)<ol> <li>Individual heterogeneity in diet and foraging behaviour is common in wild animal populations, and can be a strong determinant of how populations respond to environmental changes. Within populations, variation in foraging behaviour and the occurrence of individual tactics in relation to resources distribution can help explain differences in individual fitness, and ultimately identify important ... -
Structure and function of respiratory turbinates in phocid seals
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-01-13)In terrestrial mammals, the respiratory turbinate bones within the nasal cavity are employed to conserve heat and water. In order to investigate whether environmental temperature affects respiratory turbinate structure in phocids, we used micro-computed tomography to compare maxilloturbinate bone morphology in polar seals, grey seals and monk seals. The maxilloturbinates of polar seals have much ... -
