• Artsgruppeomtale tovinger (Diptera). Norsk rødliste for arter 2021. Artsdatabanken.

Gammelmo, Øivind; Kjærandsen, Jostein; Leendertse, Arjen; Kvifte, Gunnar Mikalsen; Jonassen, Terje (Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2021)

To associate specimens identified by molecular characters to other biological knowledge, we need reference sequences annotated by Linnaean taxonomy. In this study, we (1) report the creation of a comprehensive reference library of DNA barcodes for the arthropods of an entire country (Finland), (2) publish this library, and (3) deliver a new identification tool for insects and spiders, as based on ...
    • On the identity and distribution of the rare Rymosia tolleti Burghele-Balacesco, 1965 (Diptera, Mycetophilidae) encountered in European caves

Kurina, Olavi; Kjærandsen, Jostein; Kirik, Heli; Hadbavná, Dominika; Dénes, Anna; Oboňa, Jozef; Manko, Peter (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-06-02)
The identity and distribution of a neglected fungus gnat species, Rymosia tolleti Burghele-Balacesco, 1965, in Europe is reviewed based on examination of newly collected specimens as well as available museum materials. Rymosia tolleti is widespread but rather rare in Central Europe, with confirmed records from Romania, Slovakia, Germany, and France. All the specimens with known collection details ...
    • A Rarely Seen Taxonomic Revision with Immense Value for 41 Years and Counting: Reflections on the 1981 Monograph of Trichonta Winnertz, 1864 (Diptera: Mycetophilidae) by Raymond Gagné, with an Integrative Revision of the Trichonta Vulcani (Dziedzicki, 1889) Species Complex.

Kjærandsen, Jostein; Jakovlev, Jevgeni; Polevoi, Alexei; Salmela, Jukka; Kurina, Olavi (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-12-08)
We celebrate Raymond J. Gagné for his contributions to taxonomy of the Mycetophilidae (Diptera), specifically for his forty-one-years-old monograph of Holarctic Trichonta Winnertz, 1864 that is still the primary source used for species identification in the genus. We briefly reflect on his monograph´s impact and demonstrate by use of recent DNA barcode data extracted from BOLD Systems (BOLD) ...
    • Rocetelion humerale (Zetterstedt, 1850) (Diptera, Keroplatidae) rediscovered in Norway after more than 100 years, with description of the larva and its habitat.

Kjærandsen, Jostein (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022)
The large and conspicuous keroplatid species Rocetelion humerale (Zetterstedt, 1850) was previously documented with a single record from Norway only, a more than one hundred-year-old record of a male from Erfjord in Rogaland County, published in 1914, for which the voucher specimen has been searched for in vain in museum collections. In the summer of 2020, a new record of an adult male was ...
    • Sexual selection on wing interference patterns in Drosophila melanogaster

Katayama, Natsu; Abbott, Jessica K.; Kjærandsen, Jostein; Takahashi, Yuma; Svensson, Erik I. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014)
Animals with color vision use color information in intra- and interspecific communication, which in turn may drive the evolution of conspicuous colored body traits via natural and sexual selection. A recent study found that the transparent wings of small flies and wasps in lower-reflectance light environments display vivid and stable structural color patterns, called “wing interference patterns” ...
    • When details matter: Integrative revision of Holarctic Coelophthinia Edwards (Diptera, Mycetophilidae), including mapping of its mitogenome, leads to the description of four new pseudocryptic species

Kjærandsen, Jostein; Kerr, Peter H.; Lindemann, Jon Peder; Kurina, Olavi (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-02-14)
Background - The small genus Coelophthinia Edwards, 1941 of the subfamily Gnoristinae (Diptera, Mycetophilidae) is so far known to harbour four species from the Palaearctic, Nearctic and Neotropical Regions. Extensive DNA barcoding of fungus gnats of the family Mycetophilidae through the International Barcode of Life project (iBOL) have initiated integrative studies resulting in taxonomic upgrades ...
