Counting geodesics of given commutator length
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-15)Let Σ be a closed hyperbolic surface. We study, for fixed g, the asymptotics of the number of those periodic geodesics in Σ having at most length L and which can be written as the product of g commutators. The basic idea is to reduce these results to being able to count critical realizations of trivalent graphs in Σ. In the appendix, we use the same strategy to give a proof of Huber’s geometric ... -
COL11A1 is associated with developmental dysplasia of the hip and secondary osteoarthritis in the HUNT study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-16)Objective: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a congenital condition affecting 2-3% of all infants. DDH increases the risk of osteoarthritis, is the cause of 30% of all total hip arthroplasties (THAs) in adults <40 years of age and can result in loss of life quality. Our aim was to explore the genetic background of DDH in order to improve diagnosis, management and longterm outcome.<p><p> ... -
Bioactivity profiling and mode of action studies of antibacterial and antibiofilm agents of marine origin
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2024-01-26)<p>The emergence of drug-resistant strains and new pathogens intensifies the need for new antimicrobials. Additionally, bacterial biofilms, which contribute to persistent infections, further complicate treatment efforts. The increasing difficulty in discovering and developing new antimicrobials adds to this challenge. However, marine environments, with their vast biodiversity, offer a promising ... -
The Association between Kidney Function Biomarkers and Delayed Memory Impairments among Older Adults in the European North of Russia
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-11-30)The prevention of memory decline requires better knowledge of biological markers. We studied the associations between kidney function biomarkers and memory decline (assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination—MMSE) in elderly individuals without dementia (MMSE 24–30, age 60–74 years, n = 643, Arkhangelsk, Russia). Participants were divided by sex and into three groups according to the delayed ... -
Genomic insights into Enterococcus faecium isolates from marine bivalves highlight One Health concerns and healthcare linkages
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-12)Enterococci, especially Enterococcus faecium, are one of today’s leading causes of multidrug-resistant infections in hospital settings. The marine environment may harbour enterococci, but its role as an evolutionary niche and as a vector for the spread of enterococci is sparsely investigated. Hence, by applying enterococci in bivalves as a sentinel tool, this study aimed to describe the prevalence ... -
Post-traumatic stress disorder among heart disease patients: a clinical follow-up of individuals with myocardial infarction in the Tromsø Study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-12)Background Myocardial infarction is likely to be experienced as a life-threatening and potentially traumatic event. Approximately one-third of patients with myocardial infarction experience clinically significant symptoms of anxiety/ depression. However, it is unclear how many of these patients experience these symptoms because of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We conducted a clinical screening ... -
Change characteristics of health-related quality of life and its association with post-stroke fatigue at four-year follow-up
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-01-04)The long-term consequences of stroke may be highly individual and multifaceted. The question of how such individual differences may unfold and change beyond the first year after stroke may be of substantial clinical interest regarding which subgroups show more favourable and unfavourable rehabilitation trajectories. The current study explored functional trajectories from 1 to 4 years post-stroke ... -
Refinements of Bennett type inequalities
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023)In this paper we discuss, complement and improve some Bennett type inequalities. In particular,we prove a new refinement of a Bennett type inequality using super quadracity argument. -
Some new multidimensional Cochran-Lee and Hardy type inequalities
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023)A multidimensional Cochran-Lee operator is introduced and investigated in the frame of Hardy-type inequalities with parameters 0<p⩽q<∞. Moreover, for the case p=q and power weights even the sharp constant is derived, thus generalizing the original Cochran-Lee inequality to a multidimensional setting. As applications both several known but also new inequalities are pointed out. -
“Threat” in Russian–A Linguistic Perspective
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-01-08)The present study explores a frequent concept in modern media discourse, namely “threat,” based on a corpus analysis of the two Russian nouns groza and ugroza from 1800 to 2020. We show that the two words share a network of submeanings, but that they have different centers of gravity in the network. We identify four submeanings and suggest that the distribution of the two words has changed over ... -
The Delta III and Delta Xtend reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Risk of revision and failure mechanisms: a report on 3,650 cases from the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register 1994-2021
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-15)Background - The Delta reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is commonly used worldwide and is the most frequently used RSA in Norway. The aim of this registry-based study was to report 10- and 20-year implant survival, risk of revision, and reasons for revision in 2 consecutive time periods for Delta III (1994-2010) and Delta Xtend (2007-2021) prostheses.<p> <p>Methods - We included 3650 primary ... -
Enhanced teaching and learning outcomes from restructuring a basic organic chemistry course
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-05-10)The first course in organic chemistry is tough for many students, and motivation may be an additional serious problem if you are taking the course as a part of your study program but do not intend to become a chemist. The combination of long, speedy traditional lectures, complicated material and the use of an important new language (electron flow arrows) does not contribute to easing the cognitive ... -
A Duty not to Remain Silent: Hypocrisy and the Lack of Standing not to Blame
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-07-20)A notable feature of our practice of blaming is that blamees can dismiss blame for their own blameworthy actions when the blamer is censuring them hypocritically and, as it is often put, lacks standing to blame them as a result. This feature has received a good deal of philosophical attention in recent years. By contrast, no attention has been given the possibility that, likewise, refraining from ... -
Bacterial extracellular vesicles: towards realistic models for bacterial membranes in molecular interaction studies by surface plasmon resonance
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-13)One way to mitigate the ongoing antimicrobial resistance crisis is to discover and develop new classes of antibiotics. As all antibiotics at some point need to either cross or just interact with the bacterial membrane, there is a need for representative models of bacterial membranes and efficient methods to characterize the interactions with novel molecules -both to generate new knowledge and to ... -
The population structure of vancomycin-resistant and -susceptible Enterococcus faecium in a low-prevalence antimicrobial resistance setting is highly influenced by circulating global hospital-associated clones
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-09-19)Between 2010 and 2015 the incidence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) in Norway increased dramatically. Hence, we selected (1) a random subset of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) from the Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Diseases (2010–15; n=239) and (2) Norwegian vancomycin-susceptible E. faecium (VSEfm) bacteraemia isolates from the national surveillance ... -
Panoramic radiograph analyses for early detection of osteoporosis in the population of Northern Norway
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2024-01-26)Osteoporosis is a chronic disease affecting bone tissue that may lead to fractures from minor accidents. Roughly 20% of females and 6 % of males have osteoporosis after age 50, but the disease might be present at a younger age. Early diagnosis is challenging because the disease has no symptoms. Dental radiography is a frequent examination that might be useful for early osteoporosis screening at ... -
Interdisciplinary evidence for early domestic horse exploitation in southern Patagonia
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-08)The introduction of domestic horses transformed Indigenous societies across the grasslands of Argentina, leading to the emergence of specialized horse cultures across the Southern Cone. However, the dynamics of this introduction are poorly chronicled by historic records. Here, we apply archaeozoological and biomolecular techniques to horse remains from the site of Chorrillo Grande 1 in southern ... -
