Digitalisering av samisk kulturarv - utfordringer og muligheter

Abstract

<i>Norwegian abstract</i>: «Digitalisering av samisk kulturarv. Utfordringer og muligheter» er en presentasjon av problemstillinger og case-studier fra prosjektet «Digitalisering av samisk kulturarv. Formidling og verdiskaping i det moderne samiske kompetansesamfunnet - DIGSAM». Rapporten har seks fagkapitler som hver tar for seg diskuterer ulike aspekter og implikasjoner ved digitalisering. Kapittel 2 og 5 drøfter digitalisering av kulturarv i en overordnet kontekst, og der kapittel 2 drøfter sammenhengene mellom digitalisering, demokratisering, verdisetting, og samisk og norsk kulturarvsmateriale. Kapittel 5 undersøker hva som skjer med samisk kulturarv når denne blir dokumentert og digitalisert i møte med kulturarvsinstitusjonene. Kapittel 3 og 4 tar for seg samisk kulturarvsmateriale som utfordrer vår ide om hva kulturarv er og hvordan den kan behandles og forvaltes. Førstnevnte omhandler samiske helligsteder, som blant annet utfordrer ideen om at kulturarv skal være tilgjengelig for flest mulige. Det andre drøfter, hvordan digitalisering av primært foto gir nye muligheter og utfordringer i arbeidet med å tilbakeføre kulturarv til de samfunn som ble fratatt deler av kulturarven av kolonimakter og andre. Kapittel 6 og 7 omhandler utfordringer to av museene i DIGSAM-prosjektet møter i digitaliseringsarbeidet. Várjjat Sámi Musea/Varanger samiske museum diskuterer sine erfaringer i arbeidet med digitalisering av ulike typer museumsmateriale, bl.a. joik. Saemien Sijte tar for seg digitalisering av fotomateriale og fokuserer på muligheter, begrensinger og utfordringer. Digitalisering av kulturarv generelt er et sammensatt, komplisert og uoversiktlig felt. Det involverer flere departementer, kulturarvsinstitusjoner på ulike nivåer i kulturarvs-forvaltninga, ulike råd og utvalg og ikke minst et stort, sammensatt og uoversiktlig kulturarvsmateriale, både materialet og immaterielt. Samiske institusjoner møter utfordringer når deres materiale skal transformeres og tilpasses databaser og digitale formidlingskanaler. Det er usikkert hvordan digitalisering på sikt vil påvirke kulturarvsfeltet og samisk kulturarv spesielt. Denne rapporten peker på utfordringer og muligheter og er primært et grunnlagsdokument for museer og andre som arbeider med digitalisering av samisk kulturarv.

<i>English abstract</i>: «Digitising Sami cultural heritage. Challenges and opportunities» presents perspectives and case studies from the project “Digitising Sami cultural heritage. Dissemination and value creation in modern Sami knowledge society – DIGSAM”. In addition to the introductory chapter and conclution, the report consists of six chapters which discuss different aspects and implications of digitisation. Chapters two and five discuss digitisation of cultural heritage on a general level. Chapter two discusses the nexus of digitisation, democratisation and valuation of Sami and Norwegian cultural heritage. Chapter five examines what happens with Sami cultural heritage in processes of documentation and digitisation in encounters with cultural heritage institutions. Chapters three and four discuss how Sami cultural heritage might challenge existing notions of what cultural heritage is and how best to manage it. The first of these chapters focuses on Sami holy places and how they might challenge an ideal of universal availability and accessibility of cultural heritage. Chapter four discusses how digitalisation of primarily photographs might provide new opportunities and perspectives on the efforts to repatriate cultural heritage to indigenous communities. Chapters six and seven address challenges faced by two of the museums in the DIGSAM project in their efforts to digitise Sami cultural heritage. Várjjat Sámi Musea/Varanger Sami Museum share experiences and discusses challenges faced when digitising a variety of museum materials, among them joik. Saemien Sijte focuses on digitisation of photographic materials and discusses the opportunities, limitations and challenges met in these efforts. Digitisation of cultural heritage is a complex and multi-faceted field. It involves several departments and institutions at different levels of cultural heritage management and administration as well as different councils and committees, and not least an immense and complex body of cultural heritage, tangible as well as intangible. Sami institutions face several challenges when transforming and adjusting cultural heritage materials to fit databases and digital dissemination. It remains to be seen how digitisation will affect the field of cultural heritage, especially Sami cultural heritage. This report points to number of challenges and opportunities and is first and foremost meant to provide a knowledge base and inspiration for museums and others working with digitisation of Sami cultural heritage.
