In Norway, family mediation is mandatory for all separating parents with children under the age of 16. It is a public policy that all children should have the opportunity to participate in mediation processes, and the number of children participating is currently increasing. In this way children’s legal right to be heard is met. This article examines the mediators’ experiences from mediation processes in which children have participated. The research question is: What does children’s participation do to mediation? The results build on qualitative interviews with mediators with experience from using the Children in Mediation Model (BIM). Our attention is on the impact of children’s participation in the mediation process, for the roles of the actors and the themes focused in mediation. The results show that the mediators see children’s participation as important in different aspects of family mediation, such as the mediators’ choice of professional approach, the themes addressed in mediation and the parents’ focus on parenting after divorce.en_US
