Denne rapporten er en oppsummering av hovedtrekkene i forskningslitteraturen om barnevernets undersøkelsesarbeid. Rapporten inneholder oversikt over (i) erfaringer med bruk av utredningsmaler internasjonalt, (ii) risikovurderinger, (iii) brukernes erfaringer med barnevernundersøkelser og (iv) forhold som har betydning for barnevernets beslutninger etter en undersøkelse.
