Lung CD4+ T cells in patients with lung fibrosis produce pro-fibrotic IL-13 together with IFNγ
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-11-05)Progressive fibrosing interstitial lung diseases (PF-ILD) have poor prognosis and survival, and their pathogenesis is not well understood[1]. Mechanistically, lung fibrosis is thought to result from distorted wound-healing following tissue insults and inflammation, leading to scar formation by excess deposition of extracellular matrix proteins and destruction of lung architecture[2]. The fibrotic ... -
On the nightglow polarisation for space weather exploration
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-07-28)We present here observations of the polarisation of four auroral lines in the auroral oval and in the polar cusp using a new ground polarimeter called <i>Petit Cru</i>. Our results confirm the already known polarisation of the red line, and show for the first time that the three other lines observed here (namely 557.7 nm, 391.4 nm and 427.8 nm) are polarised as well up to a few percent. We show that ... -
Designing for experiences: a meta-ethnographic synthesis
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-17)Experiences are at the core of tourism and hospitality. Understanding how to design, manage and measure such experiences has become a key topic in academic literature focused on this sector. This paper presents the characteristics of an optimal design process model for experiences, based on the results of a meta-ethnographic synthesis of such processes. The characteristics can be seen as critical ... -
Expression of DNA repair genes in arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from Bjørnøya in the Norwegian Arctic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-01-08)High levels of organochlorines (OCs) have been measured in arctic char (<i>Salvelinus alpinus</i>) from Lake Ellasjøen on Bjørnøya, Norway (74.30°N, 19.0°E). In a nearby lake, Laksvatn, the OC-levels in arctic char were low. A previous study has shown that char from Ellasjøen had significantly higher levels of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) than char from Lake Laksvatn. Even though there is increasing ... -
Technology as Quality Work? Educational Leaders and Teachers’ Use of Digital Technology
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020-07-02)In January 2017, the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research launched the white paper ‘Culture for Quality in Higher Education’, in which they underlined the need for a cultural shift to promote quality in higher education. The white paper outlined five main strategies and a series of actions to enhance institutional ‘quality work’, and identified the use of digital technology as a key driver ... -
A Comprehensive Study on Colorectal Polyp Segmentation with ResUNet++, Conditional Random Field and Test-Time Augmentation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-01-05)Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for detection of colorectal cancer and its precursors. Existing examination methods are, however, hampered by high overall miss-rate, and many abnormalities are left undetected. Computer-Aided Diagnosis systems based on advanced machine learning algorithms are touted as a game-changer that can identify regions in the colon overlooked by the physicians ... -
Increasing temperatures, diversity loss and reorganization of deep-sea fish communities east of Greenland
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020)In recent years, Arctic and sub-Arctic fish communities have shown extensive reorganization on shelves and in shallow waters, but little is known about the ecological impact of environmental changes in deeper waters. We examined temporal changes (1998-2016) in fish diversity and community structure based on research survey data from East Greenland, over a depth gradient spanning 400 to 1500 m. A ... -
Cross-sectional associations between accelerometry-measured physical activity, left atrial size, and indices of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction: The Tromsø Study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-31)Whereas left atrial (LA) enlargement is an independent predictor for adverse cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality, this is regarded a physiological adaption of exercise. Paradoxically, LA size in athletes may overlap the enlargement observed in patients with cardiac pathology. Current knowledge is mainly derived from studies of athletes, and little is known about cardiac adaptations to ... -
Overestimation of volatility in schizophrenia and autism? A comparative study using a probabilistic reasoning task
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-01-07)<i>Background and objectives</i> - A plethora of studies has investigated and compared social cognition in autism and schizophrenia ever since both conditions were first described in conjunction more than a century ago. Recent computational theories have proposed similar mechanistic explanations for various symptoms beyond social cognition. They are grounded in the idea of a general misestimation ... -
On the relation between ionospheric parameters and sunspot number
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-05-27)In a recent study, mid-latitude ionospheric parameters were compared with solar activity; it was suggested that the relationship between these, earlier assumed stable, might be changing with time (Lastovicka, 2019). Here, the information is extended to higher latitude (69.6°N, 19.2E) and further back in time. For the ionospheric F-region (viz. the critical frequency, FoF2) the same behaviour is seen ... -
Last Glacial Maximum environmental conditions at Andøya, northern Norway; evidence for a northern ice-edge ecological “hotspot”
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-06-05)Andøya on the NW coast of Norway is a key site for understanding the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in northern Europe. Controversy has arisen concerning the local conditions, especially about the timing and extent of local glacial cover, maximum July temperatures and whether pine and/or spruce could have grown there. We reviewed all existing data and add newly analysed ancient sedimentary DNA ... -
Withstanding winter vulnerabilities: A way of life in a northern seaside community
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-08-25)This study responds to the dearth of qualitative research on long-term adaptation to winter climate-induced access and safety problems in rural areas in Western welfare societies. Based on qualitative interviews with 19 long-term residents in a thriving fishing village in northern Norway, the paper explores how they have adapted to and coped with roadside avalanches, blizzards, heavy snowfalls, and ... -
A 24,000-year ancient DNA and pollen record from the Polar Urals reveals temporal dynamics of arctic and boreal plant communities
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-09-18)A 24,000-year record of plant community dynamics, based on pollen and ancient DNA from the sediments (<i>seda</i>DNA) of Lake Bolshoye Shchuchye in the Polar Ural Mountains, provides detailed information on the flora of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and also changes in plant community composition and dominance. It greatly improves on incomplete records from short and fragmented stratigraphic sequences ... -
Intestinal epithelial cells express immunomodulatory ISG15 during active ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-02-05)<i>Background and Aims</i> - Intestinal epithelial cells [IECs] secrete cytokines that recruit immune cells to the mucosa and regulate immune responses that drive inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. However, experiments in patient-derived IEC models are still scarce. Here, we aimed to investigate how innate immunity and IEC-specific pattern recognition receptor [PRR] signalling can be ... -

Characterization of seabed properties from Scholte waves acquired on floating ice on shallow water
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-01-09)Seismic surveying of the coastal areas in the Arctic is best facilitated during wintertime when the sea ice is land‐fast. This eases the logistics of the operation and assures that there is no damage made to the vulnerable tundra. Seismic experiments on floating ice on shallow water performed in a fjord in Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic show prominent Scholte waves. The dispersion relation of ... -
Sustainable value: the perspective of horticultural producers in Arctic Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-22)Aiming for sustainable development of food value chains several assessment methods are developed, however it seems challenging to go from assessment to actual change. A solution proposed is increased stakeholder involvement also in the assessment phase. The perspective on sustainability varies depending on several variables, among which the geographical context where the producers are located. The ... -
Variation in adjunct islands: The case of Norwegian
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-11)Finite adjunct clauses are often assumed to be among the strongest islands for filler–gap dependency creation cross-linguistically, but Kush, Lohndal & Sprouse (2019) found experimental evidence suggesting that finite conditional <i>om</i>-adjunct clauses are not islands for topicalization in Norwegian. To investigate the generality of these findings, we ran three acceptability judgment experiments ...
