The European Union's responses to the COVID-19 crisis: How to fight a pandemic with the internal market
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-10-26)In a liberalized market economy, states tend to purchase supplies required for producing publicly funded services, such as healthcare, from the markets instead of producing them themselves. The availability of critical supplies thus becomes a question of supply-side availability and supply chain management, and therefore their availability is conceptualized in terms of security of supply. The European ... -
Impulse-driven oscillations of the near-Earth's magnetosphere
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-09)It is argued that a simple model based on magnetic image arguments suffices to give a convincing insight into both the basic static as well as some transient dynamic properties of the near-Earth's magnetosphere, particularly accounting for damped oscillations being excited in response to impulsive perturbations. The parameter variations of the frequency are given. Qualitative results can also be ... -
Metallaaromaticity - a protean world
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-01)The nature of magnetically induced current densities (MICD) of metallabenzenes and related compounds has been examined with relativistic DFT calculations to assess the magnetic aromaticity of the molecules. The origin of the total MICD has been analyzed in terms of individual molecular orbital (MO) contributions. Our study reveals that the s-framework of the molecules always makes a diamagnetic ... -
Phenol- and resorcinol-appended metallocorroles and their derivatization with fluorous tags
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-10)Boron tribromide-mediated demethylation of rhenium-oxo and gold meso-tris(4-methoxyphenyl)corrole and meso-tris(3,5-dimethoxyphenylcorrole), M[TpOMePC] and M[T(3,5-OMe)PC] (M = ReO, Au), have yielded the corresponding phenol- and resorcinol-appended metallocorroles, M[TpOHPC] and M[T(3,5-OH)PC], in good yields. The latter compounds proved insoluble in dichloromethane and chloroform but soluble in ... -
Scalable-resolution structured illumination microscopy
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-15)Structured illumination microscopy suffers from the need of sophisticated instrumentation and precise calibration. This makes structured illumination microscopes costly and skill-dependent. We present a novel approach to realize super-resolution structured illumination microscopy using an alignment non-critical illumination system and a reconstruction algorithm that does not need illumination ... -
Towards the Neuroevolution of Low-level artificial general intelligence
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-10-14)In this work, we argue that the search for Artificial General Intelligence should start from a much lower level than human-level intelligence. The circumstances of intelligent behavior in nature resulted from an organism interacting with its surrounding environment, which could change over time and exert pressure on the organism to allow for learning of new behaviors or environment models. Our ... -
TFHE-rs: A library for safe and secure remote computing using fully homomorphic encryption and trusted execution environments
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-01-20)Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) and Trusted Execution Environ-ments (TEEs) are complementing approaches that can both secure computa-tions running remotely on a public cloud. Existing FHE schemes are, however, malleable by design and lack integrity protection, making them susceptible to integrity breaches where an adversary could modify the data and corrupt the output. This paper describes how ... -
Predicting an unstable tear film through artificial intelligence
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-12-10)Dry eye disease is one of the most common ophthalmological complaints and is defined by a loss of tear film homeostasis. Establishing a diagnosis can be time-consuming, resource demanding and unpleasant for the patient. In this pilot study, we retrospectively included clinical data from 431 patients with dry eye disease examined in the Norwegian Dry Eye Clinic to evaluate how artificial intelligence ... -
Spin-vibronic interaction induced reverse intersystem crossing: A case study with TXO-TPA and TXO-PhCz molecules
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-01)We highlight the important roles the direct spin–orbit (DSO) coupling, the spin-vibronic (SV) coupling, and the dielectric constant of the medium play on the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) mechanism of TXO-TPA and TXO-PhCz molecules. To understand this complex phenomenon, we have calculated the RISC rate constant, kRISC, using a time-dependent correlation function-based method within the framework ... -
Porphyryne
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-10-25)Density functional theory calculations with the B3LYP*-D3 method with large STO-QZ4P basis sets unambiguously predict a singlet ground state for Zn-porphyryne. However, the calculations also predict a low singlet–triplet gap of about 0.4 eV and a high adiabatic electron affinity of 2.4 eV. Accordingly, the reactivity of porphyryne species may be dominated by electron transfer, hydrogen abstraction, ... -
Structural and metamorphic history of the Leech river shear zone, Vancouver Island, British Columbia
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-10-13)The Leech River Shear Zone (LRSZ) on southern Vancouver Island separates the metasedimentary schists of the Leech River Complex (LRC) from the accreted oceanic plateau of the Siletz-Crescent terrane. The juxtaposition of these rock units suggests a possible origin as a subduction plate boundary but tectonic context of the LRSZ has yet to be fully established. We present field, microstructural, ... -
DFT studies of the redox behavior of oligo(aza)pyridines and experimental CVs of 4′-substituted terpyridines
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-17)The cyclic voltammograms of a series of substituted terpyridine ligands are presented, showing that reduction occur generally below −2 V versus the redox potential of ferrocene. Density functional theory (DFT) calculated energies and the theoretically calculated reduction potentials of a large series of substituted oligo(aza)pyridine ligands (terpyridine, bipyridine and phenanthroline) are determined ... -
Errors in Simple Climate Model Emulations of Past and Future Global Temperature Change
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-08-04)Climate model emulators are widely used to generate temperature projections for climate scenarios, including in the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report. Here we evaluate the performance of a two-layer energy balance model in emulating historical and future temperature projections from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models. We find that emulation ... -
Active Nordic Seas deep-water formation during the last glacial maximum
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-10-24)The Nordic Seas are the primary location where the warm waters of the North Atlantic Current densify to form North Atlantic Deep Water, which plays a key part in the modern Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The formation of dense water in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean and resulting ocean circulation changes were probably driven by and contributed to the regional and global climate of ... -
Differential invariants of curves in G2 flag varieties
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-05-10)We compute the algebra of differential invariants of unparametrized curves in the homogeneous G2 flag varieties, namely in G2/P. This gives a solution to the equivalence problem for such curves. We consider the cases of integral and generic curves and relate the equivalence problems for all three choices of the parabolic subgroup P. -
A stable isotope assay with 13C-labeled polyethylene to investigate plastic mineralization mediated by Rhodococcus ruber
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-30)Methods that unambiguously prove microbial plastic degradation and allow for quantification of degradation rates are necessary to constrain the influence of microbial degradation on the marine plastic budget. We developed an assay based on stable isotope tracer techniques to determine microbial plastic mineralization rates in liquid medium on a lab scale. For the experiments, 13C-labeled ... -
Power Flow Balancing With Decentralized Graph Neural Networks
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-08-01)We propose an end-to-end framework based on a Graph Neural Network (GNN) to balance the power flows in energy grids. The balancing is framed as a supervised vertex regression task, where the GNN is trained to predict the current and power injections at each grid branch that yield a power flow balance. By representing the power grid as a line graph with branches as vertices, we can train a GNN that ... -
On the Exploitation of Multimodal Remote Sensing Data Combination for Mesoscale/Submesoscale Eddy Detection in the Marginal Ice Zone
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2022-10-17)The detection and analysis of ocean eddies via remote sensing have become a hot topic in physical oceanography during the last few decades. However, eddy identification and tracking via remote sensing can be a challenging task, since each sensor has some limitations. In order to overcome potential challenges, it is crucial to exploit the complementary information provided by different sensing systems. ... -
Understanding Pooling in Graph Neural Networks
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-07-21)Many recent works in the field of graph machine learning have introduced pooling operators to reduce the size of graphs. In this article, we present an operational framework to unify this vast and diverse literature by describing pooling operators as the combination of three functions: selection, reduction, and connection (SRC). We then introduce a taxonomy of pooling operators, based on some of ... -
Methane release from open leads and new ice following an Arctic winter storm event
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-08-03)We examine an Arctic winter storm event, which led to ice break–up, the formation of open leads, and the subsequent freezing of these leads. The methane (CH4) concentration in under–ice surface water before and during the storm event was 8–12 nmol L−1, which resulted in a potential sea–to–air CH4 flux ranging from +0.2 to +2.1 mg CH4 m−2 ...
