Towards an appropriate economic management regime of tuna fisheries in Ghana
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2003-06-02)The Ghanaian tuna fishery is a baitboat and purse seine fishery. Three main species of tuna are caught namely, Skipjack, Bigeye and Yellowfin. A detailed and comprehensive set of catch and effort data for the tuna fisheries has been obtained for the period 1980-2001. Harvest functions have been designed and estimated. By maximising the loglikelihood function by numerical methods, parameter ... -
A bioeconomic analysis of the Ghanaian tuna fishery (1980-2000)
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2002-05-31)The commercial tuna fishery of the East Atlantic and like wise the Ghanaian tuna fishery are based on the harvests of Bigeye, Skipjack and Yellowfin. In Ghana, baitboats and purse seiners commercially harvest these species of tuna. This study analysed the CPUE for the Ghanaian tuna fishery. The analysis was made for the three species and also for the two vessel types. The effort was standardized ... -
Users' attitudes toward fisheries management on Lake Zeway, Ethiopia
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2002-06-03)A resource management system combines a set of regulatory scheme within a particular resource to achieve a management outcome. The effectiveness of these regulatory measures depends on the support gained from the resource user group and the way they themselves define their problem, their involvement in the decisionmaking process, in installing and enforcing the regulations. Through semi-struct ... -
Bioeconomic analysis of artisanal marine fisheries of Tanzania (Mainland)
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2003-05-28)Artisanal marine fisheries of Tanzania involve the majority of the coastal population whose survival is entirely dependent on the coastal fishery resources. In this paper the artisanal sector of the marine fisheries for the period 1987 -2000 is analysed by applying Gordon-Schaefer Surplus Production Model on time series of total catch and standardised effort. Static reference points such as open ... -
Credit for small scale fishery in Mozambique
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2005-05-23)The small-scale fishery is a traditional activity and enrolled in social and cultural practices of the coastal communities and some places of the inland waters of Mozambique. This activity is one of the largest sources of income and employment. In 1990, Mozambique adopted the market economy and since 1992, the State begun a progressive liberalisation of financial institutions. At the same time, ... -
Age determination in the snapper Lutjanus guttatus (Pisces, Lutjanidae) and investigation of fishery management strategies in the Pacific Coast of Guatemala
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2003-06-05)The rose-spotted snapper, Lutjanus guttatus, seems to be sequentially exploited by the shrimp trawler and the artisanal fleet along the Pacific Coast of Guatemala. The growth parameters of the snapper were estimated in the present study with basis on material collected in two fishing harbours. Other biological and fishery information was compiled to simulate stock dynamics with a yield-per-recruit ... -
An assessment of the vulnerability of Ghana's coastal artisanal fishery to climate change
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2003-06-05)Considering the fact that nearly 25% of the Ghanaian people live in the coastal zone and about 10% depend on the coastal fishery for livelihood, it is likely that any changes in the production of the fishery may impact on the socio-economic lives of the people. For the past four decades, climatic conditions ha ve been found to be changing in the country. This period coincided with the conspicuous ... -
Infestation of ectoparasites on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in aquaculture production in the Ashanti region, Ghana
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2006-06-08)A survey was carried out to investigate the prevalence and mean intensities of ectoparasites infestation on the gills and skin mucus of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in some selected fish farms in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Pond water quality was also determined. Oral on-farm interviews on pond management practices were carried out on the farms. The results obtained revealed three types ... -
Management of Lake Ziway fisheries in Ethiopia
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2003-06-02)This study has been conducted in the northern most Rift Valley lake fishery – lake Ziway. Catch & effort and economic data have been used to analyze its fishery. The aim of the analysis was to review the present management situation of the lake and to apply bioeconomic theory to estimate the maximum and economic yields of the lake. The Schaefer’s surplus production model has been employed to ... -
Antibacterial activity in fish mucus from farmed fish
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2005-06-17)Mucus samples were collected from five different farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in order to study the content of antibacterial activity in the mucus and to compare the activity of mucus samples of the two different fish species. The mucus samples were diluted in buffer, desalted and adjusted to different protein concentrations in the mucus samples, A search ... -
Prediction of larval viability based on egg quality parameters and early cleavage patterns in the experiments of triploidy induction in Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua L.
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2005-05-27)Abnormal blastomere morphology may be indicative of low egg viability in fish and therefore represent a useful tool for rapid qualitative assessments for commercial and experimental aquaculture purposes. This work reviews the literature on this subject, and compares early cleavage patterns in a series of preliminary experiments of triploidy induction in Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua. Data from 4 ... -
