Seasonal environmental transitions and metabolic plasticity in a sea-ice alga from an individual cell perspective
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-01)Sea-ice microalgae are a key source of energy and nutrient supply to polar marine food webs, particularly during spring, prior to open-water phytoplankton blooms. The nutritional quality of microalgae as a food source depends on their biomolecular (lipid:protein:carbohydrate) composition. In this study, we used synchrotron-based Fourier transform infra-red microspectroscopy (s-FTIR) to measure the ... -
Unmet need for mental health care among adolescents in Asia and Europe
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-05-31)The unmet need for mental health care is a global concern. There is a lack of cross-cultural studies examining adolescent help-seeking behavior from both formal and informal sources, including both high-and lower-income countries. This study investigates mental health help-seeking behavior in eight Asian and European countries. Data from 13,184 adolescents aged 13–15 (51% girls) was analysed using ... -
The Sámi Parliament in Norway: a “breaking in” perspective
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-04-21)The Sámediggi (Sámi Parliament) in Norway was established in 1989 after the critical juncture of the Alta conflict. As the Indigenous Sámi people are dispersed, a self-determination body with political autonomy was chosen, neither fitting into a territorial nor a non-territorial model of autonomy. We examine how the Sámediggi has developed as an institution for Sámi self-determination, the kind of ... -
Malnutrition prevalence according to GLIM and its feasibility in geriatric patients: a prospective cross-sectional study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-01-19)Purpose In 2019, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) suggested a 2-step diagnostic format for malnutrition including screening and diagnosis. Prospective validation and feasibility studies, using the complete set of the five GLIM criteria, are needed. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of malnutrition, and investigate how the prevalence varied with mode of ... -
Gene Expression and Phenotypic Assessment of Egg Quality across Developmental Stages of Atlantic Cod throughout the Spawning Season
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-08)Egg quality in fishes is commonly determined by fertilisation success and cleavage patterns as a phenotypic outcome of underlying regulatory mechanisms. Although these phenotypic estimators of egg quality are useful in farming conditions, these “good quality” egg batches do not always translate to good larval growth and survival. The identification of genes involved in embryonic development may help ... -
Address Social Injustices in Taxonomy: Implement Extended Revisions of Names with Ethical Issues and Persistent Identifiers for Tracing Name Changes
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2024-07-22)The binomial nomenclature system, introduced by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century, has been fundamental for scientific communication and data management. Despite its utility, some scientific names reflect historical biases and ethical issues, including colonial legacies, racism, sexism, and derogatory terms. Recent debates highlight the need to address these injustices, with arguments both for and ... -
Protein enrichment of the red macroalga Palmaria palmata using pulsed electric field and enzymatic processing
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-08-23)The human population is steadily increasing and new alternative protein sources are necessary to secure food safety. There is a growing interest in macroalgae, or seaweed, as an alternative food source as they are rich in nutrients, minerals and carbohydrates. Among the diverse species of macroalga, Palmaria palmata, a red seaweed of growing interest due to its high protein content, represents a ... -
Dynamic evolutions of Bohm sheaths and pre-sheaths
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-02-16)The time evolutions of the Bohm sheath and the related pre-sheath are analyzed as an initial value problem. The standard classical fluid model of a collisionless plasma is used with cold ions and Boltzmann distributed electrons. Numerical solutions of the basic equations show that a stationary plasma sheath itself is established within a few ion plasma periods. It is demonstrated analytically that ... -
Deep learning to extract the meteorological by-catch of wildlife cameras
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-09)Microclimate—proximal climatic variation at scales of metres and minutes—can exacerbate or mitigate the impacts of climate change on biodiversity. However, most microclimate studies are temperature centric, and do not consider meteorological factors such as sunshine, hail and snow. Meanwhile, remote cameras have become a primary tool to monitor wild plants and animals, even at micro-scales, and ... -
Educational gradient in hip fracture incidence in Norway. The Norwegian Epidemiologic Osteoporosis Studies (NOREPOS)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-06-25)Summary Examining fracture dynamics by socioeconomic status may inform healthcare and prevention. We found a higher risk of hip fracture in men and women with lower educational level in Norway. However, by age 90+years, the cumulative incidence was higher in those with higher education, due to their higher life expectancy.

Purpose Socioeconomic gradients are seen for several health outcomes ... -
Colony-forming and single-cell picocyanobacteria nitrogen acquisition strategies and carbon fixation in the brackish Baltic Sea
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-22)Picocyanobacteria are widespread and globally significant primary producers. In brackish waters, picocyanobacterial populations are composed of diverse species with both single-cell and colony-forming lifestyles. Compared to their marine counterparts, brackish picocyanobacteria are less well characterized and the focus of research has been weighted toward single-cell picocyanobacteria. Here, we ... -
‘The many faces of laziness’
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-02-26)What do we owe to the lazy? On the assumption that the lazy are a paradigmatic case of people who are worse off, when they are through a fault, or choice, of their own, one might suspect that the answer is: not very much. This article shows that this suspicion is simple-minded. Four notions of laziness are distinguished. It is then shown that these notions differ – even from a luck egalitarian ... -
Plasma legumain in familial hypercholesterolemia: associations with statin use and cardiovascular risk markers
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-02-06)Legumain is known to be regulated in atherosclerotic disease and may have both pro- and anti-atherogenic properties. The study aimed to explore legumain in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a population with increased cardiovascular risk. Plasma legumain was measured in 251 subjects with mostly genetically verified FH, of which 166 were adults (≥18 years) and 85 were children and ... -
