Av personlig kompetanse understrekes viktigheten av trygghet og tålmodighet i hjelperrollen. dc.description.abstractBackground and purpose: Today's political guidelines show increased investment in mental health care. Many people with mental illness, who have lost their employability, report that they feel they have not been treated for their mental health problem. As a nurse working with the patient with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia , one is mostly dependent on using oneself as an instrument. It is therefore important to be aware of one's own skills, and the ways in which competence will affect the treatment the patient receives. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into what kind of therapeutic skills that nurses experience as important. Research question: What kind of competence does the nurses report as important to use in the treatment of patients with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia? Method: The study is qualitative, and data are collected using four semi-structured interviews. Results and conclusion: The nurses experienced theoretical knowledge in the form of a broad understanding of the disease, as important in therapy. Furthermore, the nurses experienced reflection on their own practice, and together with colleagues, as important for developing competence. In addition, confidence and patience were underlined as important personal competence.
