Actitudes lingüísticas y políticas en sociedades bilingües. Un estudio comparativo sobre la Comunidad Valenciana y Noruega

Abstract

This master's thesis investigates potential connections between linguistic and political attitudes within a bilingual society. It specifically focuses on the contemporary Comunidad Valenciana in Spain, where both Spanish and Valenciano/Catalán hold official language status.

It explores the dynamics between linguistic and political attitudes, with a particular emphasis on the divisions between left and right ideologies. In addition, it tries to highlight the how different linguistic attitudes constitute a cleavage within the Comunidad Valenciana, in part determined by the individual´s self-perception in relation to different centers of power, such as Madrid and Barcelona.

Additionally, this research analyzes similar dynamics in contemporary Norway, where a distinct form of bilinguism exists, with two official, yet very similar, languages, bokmål and nynorsk. The intention is to compare the findings from Norway with those from the Comunidad Valenciana, shedding light on similarities and differences in the interactions between language and politics in these two bilingual settings.
