Early to Middle Bronze Age agricultural terraces in north-east England: Morphology, dating and cultural implications
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-02-06)Terracing is found widely in the Mediterranean and in other hilly and mountainous regions of the world. Yet while archaeological attention to these ‘mundane’ landscape features has grown, they remain understudied, particularly in Northern Europe. Here, the authors present a multidisciplinary study of terraces in the Breamish Valley, Northumberland. The results date their construction to the Early ... -
The effect of climate change on avian offspring production: A global meta-analysis
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023)Climate change affects timing of reproduction in many bird species, but few studies have investigated its influence on annual reproductive output. Here, we assess changes in the annual production of young by female breeders in 201 populations of 104 bird species (N = 745,962 clutches) covering all continents between 1970 and 2019. Overall, average offspring production has declined in recent decades, ... -
Effects of asymmetric nuclear introgression, introgressive mitochondrial sweep, and purifying selection on phylogenetic reconstruction and divergence estimates in the pacific clade of Locustella Warblers
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-04-07)When isolated but reproductively compatible populations expand geographically and meet, simulations predict asymmetric introgression of neutral loci from a local to invading taxon. Genetic introgression may affect phylogenetic reconstruction by obscuring topology and divergence estimates. We combined phylogenetic analysis of sequences from one mtDNA and 12 nuDNA loci with analysis of gene flow ... -
Kunnskapsgrunnlag for å vurdere skogtiltak i klimasammenheng

Ein sieidi si rolle i religionsutøving i samtida: Skiftande tolkingar og tilnærmingar
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017)Through contemporary shamanism, parts of pre-Christian practices and symbols are incorporated into new contexts and interpretive frames. One such symbol is the sieidi (Sami sacrificial stone) and heritage site Rikkagallo in Lavangen municipality in Troms. Every year from 2012, shaman Eirik Myrhaug has organized a hike to the sieidi to conduct a ritual inspired by the traditions of his Sámi ... -
The empirical basis for research on farming settlements in northern Norway 1200 BC – 0
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2013)Palynological investigations show that farming became a considerable part of the subsistence economy amongst coastal settlements in northern Norway around 1200-1100 BC. Through a relatively small number of stray finds of Nordic Bronze Age character it is clear that these settlements have had connections to the South. Until recently these findings have not been backed up by settlement data. Two ... -

Environmental DNA of aquatic macrophytes: The potential for reconstructing past and present vegetation and environments
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-07-29)1. Environmental DNA is increasingly being used to reconstruct past and present biodiversity including from freshwater ecosystems. Macrophytes are especially good environmental indicators, thus their environmental DNA palaeorecord might shed light on past postglacial environments.<p> <p>2. Here, we first review and compare studies that use metagenomics, targeted capture, and various barcoding ... -
Epiphytic macrolichens in spruce plantations and native birch forests along a coast-inland gradient in North Norway

The era of reference genomes in conservation genomics
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-01-24)Progress in genome sequencing now enables the large-scale generation of reference genomes. Various international initiatives aim to generate reference genomes representing global biodiversity. These genomes provide unique insights into genomic diversity and architecture, thereby enabling comprehensive analyses of population and functional genomics, and are expected to revolutionize ... -
Ergotism in Norway, part I: The symptoms and their interpretation from the late Iron Age to the seventeenth century.
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Ergotism is a horrendous disease with grotesque symptoms caused by ingesting specific ergot alkaloids. Mass poisoning episodes are attributable to consumption of grain – usually rye – infected with the fungus Claviceps purpurea. By focusing on possible cases of ergotism, we re-examine Norwegian history from the sagas through to the end of the seventeenth century. Our review – not intended to be ... -
The Ervika Runestone and Other Evidence for the Early Christianization of Northern Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024)In the early 1980s, a runestone fragment with a Christian inscription from the early eleventh century was discovered in Harstad town, northern Norway, in excavated masses originating from the farm Ervika. Runestones are very rare archaeological finds in this region, but, despite being included in runological overviews, the Ervika stone has not been studied or published by archaeologists or historians. ... -
Ethnobotany of Heracleum persicum Desf. ex Fisch., an invasive species in Norway, or how plant names, uses, and other traditions evolve
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)Heracleum persicum was introduced to Norway as an ornamental in the 1830′s. Towards the end of the 19th century, it started spreading outside gardens, later to become a frequent sight in the major towns and settlements of North Norway – and a veritable pest plant. During the last 100 years or so, a substantial ethnobotanical tradition related to the species has evolved, demonstrating that folk ... -

Evolutionary consequences of genomic deletions and insertions in the woolly mammoth genome
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-08-01)Woolly mammoths had a set of adaptations that enabled them to thrive in the Arctic environment. Many mammoth-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) responsible for unique mammoth traits have been previously identified from ancient genomes. However, a multitude of other genetic variants likely contributed to woolly mammoth evolution. In this study, we sequenced two woolly mammoth genomes and ...
