Gjennom en serie eksperimentelle studier på gris, inkludert etablering av en målemetode for utvikling av akutt insulinresistens, ble endringer i insulinsensitivitet og i lever- og skjelettmuskelceller undersøkt etter et stort kirurgisk inngrep. Resultatene viser at de cellulære endringene som ledsager utvikling av insulinresistens etter kirurgi har mange likhetstrekk med de endringer man ser ved type 2 diabetes. Et viktig funn i studien er at disse endringene til dels kan motvirkes ved å unngå faste og isteden innta en enkelt dose karbohydratdrikk like før kirurgi. Dette dempet en kirurgiutløst økning av betennelses-assosierte proteiner i muskelcellene og bedret den dempende effekten av insulin på produksjonen av et protein i muskulaturen som hemmer sukkeropptaket i mitokondrier. Funnene kan bidra til utvikling av nye kliniske strategier for ernæring før og etter kirurgiske inngrep.
