The effects of time-variation of electron fluxes from the auroral ionosphere on M-I coupling
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-15)Electric potential-differences between the magnetospheric and the ionospheric end of a magnetic flux tube lead to the downward acceleration of electrons in the ionosphere, producing visible auroral arcs. Most of the potential-drop is situated in a narrow altitude-region known as double layer. In the ionosphere, the precipitation of high-energy electrons will produce secondary electrons. Some ... -
Stochastic Modelling and Numerical Simulations of Radial Filament Motion and Average Profiles at the Boundary of Fusion Plasmas
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-15)<p>The boundary region of magnetically confined plasmas is well known to have inherently fluctuating parameters. Advances in experimental measurements and numerical computations have revealed that the fluctuation-driven transport of particles and heat across the magnetic field lines is mainly dominated by the radial motion of blob-like filament structures. These structures, which are localized in ... -
Numerical Simulations of Turbulence at the Boundary of Fusion Plasma
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2022-05-15)Numerical simulations of reduced fluid models describing magnetized plasmas have previously been used to study the boundary of fusion plasmas extensively. A common approximation applied to these models is the so-called Boussinesq approximation. One of the requirements for the Boussinesq approximation to be applicable is that the background particle density is significantly higher than the fluctuations ... -
Application of quantitative phase microscopy in microbiology for label-free imaging of bacteria
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-03-15)Bacteria are the planet’s oldest and the most common life forms. Bacteria have developed alongside humans and are good and harmful to our health. Our bodies contain nearly ten times the number of bacteria as human cells, and this natural microbiota is critical for appropriate development, nutrition, and disease resistance. Unfortunately, we live in an environment rich with bacteria that may cause ... -
Planetary auroral imaging
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2021-07-09)The interaction of the solar wind and the Earth magnetosphere cause auroras. The energetic electrically charged particles, mostly electrons, accelerate along the Earth magnetic field lines into the upper atmosphere, where they collide with gas atoms, causing them to emit light. Some planets also have auroral emission in their characteristic environment. The Jovian magnetosphere is the largest ... -
Towards Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Diabetic Retinopathy Detection in the Tromsø Eye Study
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2021-05-29)Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an eye disease which affects a third of the diabetic population. It is a preventable disease, but requires early detection for efficient treatment. While there has been increasing interest in applying deep learning techniques for DR detection in order to aid practitioners make more accurate diagnosis, these efforts are mainly focused on datasets that have been collected ... -
Detecting Unhealthy Comments in Norwegian using BERT
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2021-05-28)In this work we present a new Norwegian labeled dataset of 7078 comments for unhealthy comment detection. The dataset is used to fine-tune a BERT model, and demonstrates that BERT has the ability to detect subtle forms of toxicity, also in Norwegian. We compare how the different newly released Norwegian BERT models perform when fine-tuned on our dataset, and we also experiment with how English data ... -
Chip Based Optical Nanoscopy: System Integration and Automation
(Mastergradsoppgave; Master thesis, 2019-05-15)An integrated photonic chip based nanoscopy system has previously been developed at UiT, which allows for several advantages over conventional total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy and nanoscopy (i.e. super-resolutionnanoscopy). While the proof-of-concept has been demonstrated, there were several important system optimization tasks that were needed for making the ... -
Detecting EV Charging From Hourly Smart Meter Data
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2020-05-15)Detecting electrical vehicle (EV) charging from smart meter data (EV detection) is a highly relevant problem for the distribution system operators (DSOs), especially with the expected growth of EVs worldwide. There are several reasons why DSOs may want to detect EV charging. In the present day, the main motivation is to reduce the total load on the grid in high demand periods. This can be achieved ... -
Evaluating Deep Q-Learning Techniques for Controlling Type 1 Diabetes
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2020-02-13)Patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) must continually decide how much insulin to inject before each meal to maintain an acceptable level of blood glucose. Recent research has worked on a solution for this burden: the artificial pancreas (AP), which is a closed-loop system combining a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump with a decision-making algorithm. The goal of this thesis is ... -
Backpropagation Neural Networks for Facial Recognition
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 1991-12)A survey was conducted testing the aptitude of neural networks to recognize human faces. The motivation for this a study is the possibility of designing automatic security systems. Pictures of 511 subjects were collected. The pictures captured both profiles and many natural expressions of the subject. Some of the subjects were wearing glasses, sunglasses or hats in some of the pictures. The images ... -
