The influence of different fuels and injection methods of RCCI and DCI in hybrid ICE-Battery vehicle performance
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-01-16)The incorporation of two recent technologies of using the dual-fuel reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion engine within the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is practiced to show how this combination can reduce the emission and enhance the thermal efficiency of the system. In particular, the heat transfers from the engine wall and the exhaust heat flow from the engine under ... -

Infrared Thermal Signature Evaluation of a Pure and Saline Ice for Marine Operations in Cold Climate
(Peer reviewed; Journal article; Tidsskriftsartikkel, 2015)Marine operations in cold climates are subjected to abundant ice accretion, which can lead to heavy ice loads over larger surface area. For safe and adequate operations on marine vessels over a larger area, remote ice detection and ice mitigation system can be useful. To study this remote ice detection option, lab experimentation was performed to detect the thermal gradient of ice with the infrared ... -
Infrared Thermal Signature Evaluation of a Pure Ice Block
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2015-08-23)Marine operations in cold climates are subjected to heavy ice accretion, which can lead to heavy ice loads causing safety concerns. Atmospheric and sea spray icing can cause severe ice accretion on structures. Ice detection over the relatively larger surface area of marine platforms and vessels could be significant for ice mitigation and its removal in cold climates. A thermal ice signature ... -
Integration of renewable energy and sustainable development with strategic planning in the mining industry
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-09-16)With an increase in the world population, the global demand for minerals is rising, increasing energy consumption. Due to the distance of mines from urban areas, the energy required for mining is highly dependent on fossil fuels. Using renewable energies is an effective solution to reducing this problem. This study examines the challenges and opportunities of integrating renewable energy into ... -
International collaboration for meeting the challenges of huge and cascading disasters
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2021-09)Some crisis have an international impact. How is it possible to enhance collaboration between nations in huge and cascading disasters? We will present Barents Rescue (BR) as an inspiration for our Student Barents Rescue (SBR) and thereafter show examples from a student pilot with an international scenario. -
International Cooperation on Search and Rescue in the Arctic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-09)SAR in the Arctic is a complex and dynamic cross-disciplinary activity that requires the combined effort of multiple actors with specialized human and technical resources. Due to limited resources and infrastructure in the Arctic, international cooperation is particularly important. This article applies a conceptual framework drawn from regime-theory to study SAR cooperation in the Arctic. More ... -
Investigation of Ice-PVC separation under Flexural Loading using FEM Analysis
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-08-29)This paper presents the FEM technique applied in the study of ice separation over a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) surface. A two layer model of ice and PVC is analysed theoretically using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and the rule of mixtures. The physical samples are prepared by freezing ice over the PVC surfaces. The samples are tested experimentally in a four-point loading setup. The experimental results ... -
Investigation on heavy metals pollution of municipal refuse leachate from Tromsø landfill, Northern Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)To investigate the heavy metal pollution in leachate from sanitary landfill site of municipal solid waste, a survey was conducted in Tromsø, Northern Norway. Results shows that contents of heavy metals in landfill leachate follow the order Mn>Zn>Ni>Cu>Cr>As>Pb>Cd>Hg, and the order of the risk of different heavy metals is: Mn>Ni>As>Zn>Cr>Pb>Cd>Hg>Cu. The concentrations of Mn and Ni in landfill leachate ... -

Kinematic motion models based vessel state estimation to support advanced ship predictors
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-08-14)Advanced ship predictors can generally be considered as a vital part of the decision-making process of autonomous ships in the future, where the information on vessel maneuvering behavior can be used as the source of information to estimate current vessel motions and predict future behavior precisely. As a result, the navigation safety of autonomous vessels can be improved. In this paper, vessel ... -

Leadership styles and safety performance in high-risk industries: a systematic review
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-03-03)The importance of leadership on safety has been well acknowledged and studied for many years in various high-risk industries. This paper aims at (1) synthesising the existing safety leadership research by performing a systematic literature review to gain an overview of the relationship between various leadership styles and safety performance in high-risk industries with a main focus on health and ... -
Leaders’ Influence Tactics for Safety: An Exploratory Study in the Maritime Context
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-02-05)A growing body of research has pointed out effective leadership as an important influencing factor for safety performance in various high-risk industrial contexts. However, limited systematic knowledge is available about how leaders can effectively persuade rule compliance, and stimulate actions and participation. Recognizing effective means of influence is of value for safety leadership development ... -
Lean Production – One path to organizational Resilience?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-11-07)In this indepth singlecase study from a large international aerospace and defence company, we ask the following research question: In what ways does lean production influence organizational resilience? Our findings suggest that various lean practices, such as lean meetings, using lean tools and a lean productioninspired organizational culture promote the development of organizational capabilities ... -
Learning from crisis: the 2015 and 2017 avalanches in Longyearbyen
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-10-27)Longyearbyen has been hit by two avalanches in 2015 and 2017 causing severe damages to housing and two fatalities. In this study we investigate organised learning processes regarding emergency preparedness and response following the avalanches. Longyearbyen provides a case of particular interest as climatic change rapidly is altering the environmental conditions, including the risk of avalanches.< ... -
Learning from experience
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-01-14)The purpose of this study was to explore how pilots potentially learn from their and others‘ experience through post-flight debriefing. Through a case study of pilots who fly air ambulances, this article attempts to illustrate the importance of learning from experience (Bion 1962) among pilots in aviation. -
Lessons learned from accident and near-accident experiences in traffic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-08-17)The focus of this article is risky behavior in traffic. What do people learn from accidents and near-accidents? Experience with accidents may demand increased caution. However, near-accidents are inherently ambiguous: On the one hand, they signal that margins were good enough, inspiring increased risk-taking; on the other hand, they signal danger that could induce increased caution. To explore these ... -
