From its origins, the city of Tromsø was regarded as the single-family town in the north, a building culture that avoided the burning after the second world war and which after the war has continued its development with mainly the construction of single-family homes throughout the island. It is a dense city where distances are small.
The island has seen an increasing development on the east side of the island, in contrast to the west side of the island. The vibrant energy of a the city centre stands in opposite to the south-western part, where the natural beauty of the untouched coastline lays. Due the urbanization and infrastructural development, there are now limited areas of natural coastline left on Tromsøya. Most of the island’s coastline has been modified and developed with various structures.
This project constitutes a proposal to the existing and upcoming plans of further developing infrastructure on the untouched coastline of the island. The task of this project is to work within the south-western part of the island, along Kvaløyvegen, for preservation through use. Taking back the foreshore by highlighting the qualities and and extracting the history, increasing biodiversity, and increasing the social potential within the litoral zone, and using the historical road as a coastal trail and outer border.
