Mixing It Up: The Place of the Arts in Multidisciplinary Contexts
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2017)In this era of change, when the placement of the arts is coming under scrutiny at local, national, and international levels, the time seems right to explore the role of the artist (broadly understood) in multidisciplinary contexts. What can we offer, what can others offer us, and how can such partnerships succeed? -

Prevailing weather conditions and diet composition affect chick growth and survival in the black-legged kittiwake
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-10-04)To identify priorities for management of seabirds during the breeding season, it is important to understand the ecological mechanisms driving chick growth and survival. In this study, we examined the effects of diet and prevailing weather on the growth and survival of chicks of black-legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla over a 10 yr period at Anda, a seabird colony in northern Norway. We show that ... -
To tufter i Abelsborg. Utgravning av to tidlig metalltidstufter
Global phenological insensitivity to shifting ocean temperatures among seabirds
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-04-02)Reproductive timing in many taxa plays a key role in determining breeding productivity, and is often sensitive to climatic conditions. Current climate change may alter the timing of breeding at different rates across trophic levels, potentially resulting in temporal mismatch between the resource requirements of predators and their prey. This is of particular concern for higher-trophic-level organisms, ... -
Amphipod family distributions around Iceland
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018)Amphipod crustaceans were collected at all 55 stations sampled with an epibenthic sledge during two IceAGE expeditions (Icelandic marine Animals: Genetics and Ecology) in 2011 and 2013. In total, 34 amphipod families and three superfamilies were recorded in the samples. Distribution maps are presented for each taxon along with a summary of the regional taxonomy for the group. Statistical analyses ... -
On a new species of Amphilochus from deep and cold Atlanic waters, with a note on the genus Amphilochopsis (Amphipoda, Gammaridea, Amphilochidae)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-01-23)<i>Amphilochus manudens</i> and <i>Amphilochopsis hamatus</i> are redescribed based on specimens from the BioIce, Mareano, and IceAGE programmes. Te new species <i>Amphilochus anoculus</i> <b>sp. n.</b> is described based on material from the IceAGE programme and the preceding BioIce programme; it is separated from the closely related <i>Amphilochus manudens</i> by the absence of eyes, a ... -
Population genomics of Mesolithic Scandinavia: Investigating early postglacial migration routes and high-latitude adaptation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-01-09)Scandinavia was one of the last geographic areas in Europe to become habitable for humans after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). However, the routes and genetic composition of these postglacial migrants remain unclear. We sequenced the genomes, up to 57× coverage, of seven hunter-gatherers excavated across Scandinavia and dated from 9,500–6,000 years before present (BP). Surprisingly, among the ... -
Climate fluctuations and differential survival of bridled and non-bridled Common Guillemots Uria aalge
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2012-06-22)Climate fluctuations and its effects on ecological processes are evident in most areas worldwide but whether such climatic effects are induced phenotypic plasticity or whether animals adapt to the new environment through micro‐evolutionary processes is poorly known. In this study we have analyzed long‐term data (22 years) on the relationship between climatic fluctuations and the adult survival of ... -
Is there anybody in there? Entomological evidence from a boat burial at Øksnes in Vesterålen, northern Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-07-27)Although there are several well preserved Viking boat burials from Norway, until recently palaeoecological research on their context has often been limited. Research on fossil insect remains in particular can provide valuable forensic information even in the absence of an actual body. Here we present archaeoentomological information from a boat burial at Øksnes in Vesterålen, northeast Norway, an ... -
A genetic fingerprint of Amphipoda from Icelandic waters – the baseline for further biodiversity and biogeography studies
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-01-23)Amphipods constitute an abundant part of Icelandic deep-sea zoobenthos yet knowledge of the diversity of this fauna, particularly at the molecular level, is scarce. The present work aims to use molecular methods to investigate genetic variation of the Amphipoda sampled during two IceAGE collecting expeditions. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) of 167 individuals originally assigned ... -
Plant DNA metabarcoding of lake sediments: How does it represent the contemporary vegetation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-04-17)Metabarcoding of lake sediments have been shown to reveal current and past biodiversity, but little is known about the degree to which taxa growing in the vegetation are represented in environmental DNA (eDNA) records. We analysed composition of lake and catchment vegetation and vascular plant eDNA at 11 lakes in northern Norway. Out of 489 records of taxa growing within 2 m from the lake shore, ... -
Shamanism in Contemporary Norway: Concepts in Conflict
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-07-23)To choose a terminology for an investigation of shamanism in contemporary Norway is not entirely without problems. Many shamans are adamant in rejecting the term religion in connection with their practices and choose broader rubrics when describing what they believe in. When shamanism was approved as an official religion by the Norwegian government in 2012, the tensions ran high, and many shamanic ... -
The construction of new scientific norms for solving grand challenges: Reflections from the Norwegian Idélab research programme
(Working paper; Arbeidsnotat, 2017)There is an increasing recognition that there are a class of problems which society must solve urgently in the 21st century if humanity is to survive into the 22nd, the so-called Grand Challenges.
