Determinants of trip duration for international tourists in Norway; a parametric survival analysis
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-10-10)How long a tourist stays in a host country acts as an indicator of tourism industry’s contribution towards the national economy. The purpose of this study is to examine how socio-demographic characteristics of international tourists, their travelling purpose, tourism products and characteristics of the destination influence the length of stay in Norway, by estimating a parametric survival model. ... -
A head start for an invasive species in a strongly seasonal environment? Growth of Elodea canadensis in boreal lakes
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-11-20)Many invasive species are expanding northwards into boreal and subarctic habitats, but research on the factors favoring their establishment in these regions remains limited. In three Swedish lakes we investigated the growth of Elodea canadensis Michx, a highly invasive macrophyte that is spreading northwards in Europe and Alaska. We conducted an in situ growth experiment, maintained for ten months, ... -
The impact of coastal grabbing on community conservation – a global reconnaissance
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-05-14)"Coastal grab" refers to the contested appropriation of coastal (shore and inshore) space and resources by outside interests. This paper explores the phenomenon of coastal grabbing and the effects of such appropriation on community-based conservation of local resources and environment. The approach combines social-ecological systems analysis with socio-legal property rights studies. Evidence of ... -
Creating political spaces at sea - governmentalisation and governability in Norwegian fisheries
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-10-30)How do technologies of power make the world governable? The understanding of how management techniques create governability remains rather poor. In this article, I analyse how spatial regulation in Norwegian fisheries direct human behaviour towards scientific, political, and administrative objectives. Like other fisheries’ regulations, they contribute to governmentalisation and governability, and ... -
Seafood from a changing Arctic
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-10-27)We review current knowledge about climate change impacts on Arctic seafood production. Large-scale changes in the Arctic marine food web can be expected for the next 40–100 years. Possible future trajectories under climate change for Arctic capture fisheries anticipate the movement of aquatic species into new waters and changed the dynamics of existing species. Negative consequences are ... -
Riparian plant litter quality increases with latitude
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-09-05)Plant litter represents a major basal resource in streams, where its decomposition is partly regulated by litter traits. Litter-trait variation may determine the latitudinal gradient in decomposition in streams, which is mainly microbial in the tropics and detritivore-mediated at high latitudes. However, this hypothesis remains untested, as we lack information on large-scale trait variation for ... -
Anti-Infective Effect of Adhesive Probiotic Lactobacillus in Fish is Correlated with Their Spatial Distribution in the Intestinal Tissue
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-10-16)In this study, we tested the distribution of 49 Lactobacillus strains in the mucus and mucosa of the intestine tissue of zebrafish. We observed a progressive change in the spatial distribution of Lactobacillus strains, and suggested a division of the strains into three classes: mucus type (>70% in mucus), mucosa type (>70% in mucosa) and hybrid type (others). The hybrid type strains were more efficient ... -
Predicting the effect of seine rope layout pattern and haul-in procedure on the effectiveness of demersal seine fishing: a computer simulation-based approach
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-08-03)Demersal Seining is an active fishing method applying two long seine ropes and a seine net. Demersal seining relies on fish responding to the seine rope as it moves during the fishing process. The seine ropes and net are deployed in a specific pattern encircling an area on the seabed. In some variants of demersal seining the haul-in procedure includes a towing phase where the fishing vessel moves ... -
Marine reserve creation and interactions between fisheries and capture-based aquaculture: A bio-economic model analysis
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-12-12)The rapid growth of aquaculture affects wild fisheries in several ways. We present a bioeconomic model of the interaction between a commercial wild fishery and capture-based aquaculture that depends on harvest of wild juveniles. We assume that aquaculture reduces the intrinsic growth rate of the wild fish stock due to wild caught juveniles used as seeds, influencing wild stock size and commercial ... -
The geographic scope of the svalbard treaty and norwegian sovereignty: historic - or evolutionary - interpretation?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017)The Svalbard Treaty and its claimed ‘extended-reach’ jurisdiction incorporating both the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone (EEZ) – ie a fisheries protection zone (FPZ) – is an international law puzzle. Disputes regarding the Treaty’s jurisdictione ratione terrae results from interpretative differences. My findings are as follows: the Treaty’s concept of ‘full and absolute sovereignty’ ... -

The relationship between switching costs, customer satisfaction and loyalty in the Norwegian mobile market
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2008-05-15)Few studies in marketing have examined the role of switching costs in regards of both customer satisfaction and loyalty. The presence of switching costs can mean that some seemingly loyal customers are actually dissatisfied but do not defect because of high switching costs. Thus, it is believed that the level of switching costs moderates the link between satisfaction and loyalty. This work seeks to ... -
Climate-driven changes in functional biogeography of Arctic marine fish communities
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-11-14)Climate change triggers poleward shifts in species distribution leading to changes in biogeography. In the marine environment, fish respond quickly to warming, causing community-wide reorganizations, which result in profound changes in ecosystem functioning. Functional biogeography provides a framework to address how ecosystem functioning may be affected by climate change over large spatial ... -
Drivers for compliance with fisheries rules. A systematic literature review
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-11-17)Many diverse conflicts are commonly found in a complex and dynamic system such as a fishery. Usual sources of conflicts are property rights conflicts, space utilization conflicts (e.g. fishers versus aquaculture), enforcement conflicts and conflicts that occur between the fishers and the government. The latter two may lead to issues with fisher’s compliance with state laws. This thesis examines ... -
Comparison of individual transferable quota in New Zealand and individual vessel quota in Norway
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-11-21)Since the introduction of licenses and quotas as important management instruments, Norway has established a system of non-transferable IVQs. The “cod-crisis” was a reason for the Nor- wegian Parliament to reject an ITQ system with a high degree of transactions. However, since the late 80s the IVQ regime have forced towards a market-oriented regime for the expansion of the transferability. The overall ... -
