Composition of exosomes derived from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) head kidney leukocytes
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2015-06-28)Exosomes are secreted nanosize vesicles (30−100 nm) derived from multivesicular endosomes. Exosomes are released by different immune cell types, including T- and B-lymphocytes, mast cells and antigen-presenting cells (APCs). The composition of exosomes - including protein and RNA content reflects their endosomal origin and the type of cells that produce them. Mammalian APCs produce large amounts ... -

Getting traceability right, from fish to advanced bio-technological products: a review of legislation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-10-01)Traceability is a tool used by regulators to manage risk in multiple supply chains, including supply chains of goods derived from genetically modified organisms, human blood, seafood products, toys and hazardous waste. This tool may help support a variety of claims that range from concern for nature to consumer satisfaction and health. This paper examines the consistency of European Union legislation ... -
Polar front associated variation in prokaryotic community structure in Arctic shelf seafloor
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-01-23)Spatial variations in composition of marine microbial communities and its causes have largely been disclosed in studies comprising rather large environmental and spatial differences. In the present study, we explored if a moderate but temporally permanent climatic division within a contiguous arctic shelf seafloor was traceable in the diversity patterns of its bacterial and archaeal communities. ... -
Transcription factor T-bet in Atlantic salmon: characterization and gene expression in mucosal tissues during Aeromonas salmonicida infection
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-07-06)The T-box transcription factor T-bet is expressed in a number of hematopoietic cell types in mammals and plays an essential role in the lineage determination of Th1 T-helper cells and is considered as an essential feature for both innate and adaptive immune responses in higher vertebrates. In the present study, we have identified and characterized the full-length Atlantic salmon T-bet cDNA (3502 ... -
Heat treatment increases the protein bioaccessibility in the red seaweed dulse (Palmaria palmata), but not in the brown seaweed winged kelp (Alaria esculenta)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-04-25)Bioaccessibility of plant proteins has been shown to be inferior to that of proteins of animal origin. Heat treatment has been shown to positively affect this in some plants. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of heat treatment on bioaccessibility of seaweed proteins. An in vitro gastrointestinal digestion model was used for evaluation of potential effects on the brown seaweed Alaria ... -

Morphological update on Calycina marina (Pezizellaceae, Helotiales, Leotiomycetes), a new combination for Laetinaevia marina
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-11-05)Laetinaevia marina is a frequent ascomycetous fungus that is widely distributed on the seashores of Scandinavia and Great Britain. It grows on fronds of Fucales (Phaeophyceae) that are washed ashore and lie decaying at the high tide mark or further up on the beach. It is one of the few described marine discomycetes. In the current generic concept it is regarded as a member of Naevioideae ... -
Baited pots as an alternative fishing gear in the Norwegian fishery for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

The two types of technologies were a Canadian cod pot developed by Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland Canada and a Norwegian two-chamber pot ... -
Effects of reduced water oxygen saturation on growth and plasma cortisol levels in juvenile lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) in aquaculture
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2015-11-15)In the present study, primary responses (cortisol secretion) to long-term and short-term hypoxia are examined. For the long-term experiment groups that were exposed to lower oxygen saturation; 55%, 69% and 81% had increased plasma cortisol levels and decreased final body mass, length and overall specific growth rate compared to the control group which were exposed to 96% oxygen saturation. -
