The snails of Super Mario Bros
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-11)Nintendo has recently released a new Mario game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a multiplayer platformer involving a good dose of mushrooms, both in-game and presumably during development. But psychedelic trips aside, in the first few stages of the game we are introduced to a completely new (and arguably the best) “enemy” in Mario games: a snail with a fabulous pink shell. Figure 1. Snail (©Nintendo, ... -

Archaeological documentation of soapstone quarry locations has been minimal, although the Geological Survey of Norway has systematically surveyed a majority of the soapstone exposures in the ... -
Soil organic carbon stabilization mechanisms and temperature sensitivity in old terraced soils
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-12-08)Being the most common human-created landforms, terrace construction has resulted in an extensive perturbation of the land surface. However, our mechanistic understanding of soil organic carbon (SOC) (de-)stabilization mechanisms and the persistence of SOC stored in terraced soils is far from complete. Here we explored the factors controlling SOC stability and the temperature sensitivity (<i>Q</i>< ... -

sPlotOpen – An environmentally-balanced, open-access, global dataset of vegetation plots
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-06-21)Motivation: Assessing biodiversity status and trends in plant communities is critical for understanding, quantifying and predicting the effects of global change on ecosystems. Vegetation plots record the occurrence or abundance of all plant species co-occurring within delimited local areas. This allows species absences to be inferred, information seldom provided by existing global plant datasets. ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-05-12)The NCBI Sequence Read Archive currently hosts microRNA sequencing data for over 800 different species, evidencing the existence of a broad taxonomic distribution in the field of small RNA research. Simultaneously, the number of samples per miRNA-seq study continues to increase resulting in a vast amount of data that requires accurate, fast and user-friendly analysis methods. Since the previous ... -
Stangnes syd.

Stone Age dwellings, sites and environment in coastal northern Norway: surveys and documentation of house-pit sites
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021)The northernmost parts of Europe has a large number of sites with Stone Age house-pits, the majority of which date from c. 5000 BC onwards. Remarkably, the remains of these dwellings are many places still visible on the surface. In northern Norway, such dwellings concentrate in the coastal areas, with a more limited number found on inland sites. In order to use these in analyses of settlement duration, ... -

The stress hormone corticosterone in a marine top predator reflects short-term changes in food availability
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015)In many seabird studies, single annual proxies of prey abundance have been used to explain variability in breeding performance, but much more important is probably the timing of prey availability relative to the breeding season when energy demand is at a maximum. Until now, intraseasonal variation in prey availability has been difficult to quantify in seabirds. Using a state-of-the-art ocean ... -
