    • Geodesic Webs of Hypersurfaces

Goldberg, Vladislav V.; Lychagin, Valentin V. (Working paper; Arbeidsnotat, 2008-12-11)
In the present paper we study geometric structures associated with webs of hypersurfaces. We prove that with any geodesic (n + 2)-web on an n-dimensional manifold there is naturally associated a unique projective structure and, provide that one of web foliations is pointed, there is also associated a unique affine structure. The projective structure can be chosen by the claim that the leaves of all ...
    • Geodesic Webs on a Two-Dimensional Manifold and Euler Equations

Goldberg, Vladislav V.; Lychagin, Valentin V. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2008-10-30)
We prove that any planar 4-web defines a unique projective structure in the plane in such a way that the leaves of the web foliations are geodesics of this projective structure. We also find conditions for the projective structure mentioned above to contain an affine symmetric connection, and conditions for a planar 4-web to be equivalent to a geodesic 4-web on an affine symmetric surface. Similar ...
    • The global atmospheric energy transport analysed by a wavelength-based scale separation

Stoll, Johannes Patrick; Grand Graversen, Rune; Messori, Gabriele (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022)
The global atmospheric circulation is fundamental for the local weather and climate by redistributing energy and moisture. To the present day, there is a knowledge gap at which spatial scales the energy and its components are transported. Therefore, we separate the meridional atmospheric energy transport in the ERA5 reanalysis by the spatial scales, the quasi-stationary and transient flow patterns, ...
    • A global climatology of polar lows investigated for local differences and wind-shear environments

Stoll, Johannes Patrick (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-04-11)
Polar lows are intense mesoscale cyclones developing in marine polar air masses. This study presents a new global climatology of polar lows based on the ERA5 reanalysis for the years 1979–2020. Criteria for the detection of polar lows are derived based on a comparison of five polarlow archives with cyclones derived by a mesoscale tracking algorithm. The characteristics associated with polar lows are ...

Chaudhry, S.; Chapman, Sandra; Gjerloev, J.; Beggan, C.D. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-04-26)
We show the global dynamics of spatial correlation of Pc2 wave activity can track the evolution of the 2015 St. Patrick's Day geomagnetic storm for an 8 hr time window around onset. The global spatially coherent response is tracked by forming a dynamical network from 1 s data using the full set of 100+ ground-based magnetometer stations collated by SuperMAG and Intermagnet. The pattern of spatial ...

Reproducible climate reconstructions of the Common Era (1 CE to present) are key to placing industrial-era warming into the context of natural climatic variability. Here we present a community-sourced database of temperature-sensitive proxy records from the PAGES2k initiative. The database gathers 692 records from 648 locations, including all continental regions and major ocean basins. The records ...
    • Global warming projections derived from an observation-based minimal model

Rypdal, Kristoffer (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-01-29)
A simple conceptual model for the global mean surface temperature (GMST) response to CO2 emissions is presented and analysed. It consists of linear long-memory models for the GMST anomaly response 1T to radiative forcing and the atmospheric CO2-concentration response 1C to emission rate. The responses are connected by the standard logarithmic relation between CO2 concentration and its radiative ...

Rypdal, Kristoffer (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2015-09-18)
A simple conceptual model for the global mean surface temperature (GMST) response to CO2 emissions is presented and analysed. It consists of linear long-memory models for the GMST anomaly response ∆T to radiative forcing and atmospheric CO2 - 5 concentration response ∆C to emission rate. The responses are connected by the standard logarithmic relation between CO2 concentration and its radiative ...
    • Greedy weights for matroids

Johnsen, Trygve; Verdure, Hugues (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-19)
We introduce greedy weights of matroids, inspired by those for linear codes. We show that a Wei duality holds for two of these types of greedy weights for matroids. Moreover we show that in the cases where the matroids involved are associated to linear codes, our definitions coincide with those for codes. Thus our Wei duality is a generalization of that for linear codes given by Schaathun. In ...
    • Hamming weights and Betti numbers of Stanley–Reisner rings associated to matroids

Johnsen, Trygve; Verdure, Hugues (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
To each linear code C over a finite field we associate the matroid M(C) of its parity check matrix. For any matroid M one can define its generalized Hamming weights, and if a matroid is associated to such a parity check matrix, and thus of type M(C) , these weights are the same as those of the code C . In our main result we show how the weights d1,…,dk of a matroid M are determined by the N -graded ...
    • A Heterotic Kodaira--Spencer Theory at One-Loop

Ashmore, Anthony; Murgas Ibarra, Javier Jose; McNutt, David Duncan; Strickland-Constable, Charles; Svanes, Eirik Eik; Tennyson, David; Winje, Sander (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-10-23)
We consider a heterotic version of six-dimensional Kodaira-Spencer gravity derived from the heterotic superpotential. We compute the one-loop partition function and fnd it can be expressed as a product of holomorphic Ray-Singer torsions. We discuss its topological properties and potential gauge and gravitational anomalies. We show these anomalies can be cancelled using Green-Schwarz-like ...
    • Hierarchical Representation Learning in Graph Neural Networks with Node Decimation Pooling

Bianchi, Filippo Maria; Grattarola, Daniele; Livi, Lorenzo; Alippi, Cesare (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-31)
In graph neural networks (GNNs), pooling operators compute local summaries of input graphs to capture their global properties, and they are fundamental for building deep GNNs that learn hierarchical representations. In this work, we propose the Node Decimation Pooling (NDP), a pooling operator for GNNs that generates coarser graphs while preserving the overall graph topology. During training, the ...
    • Higher weight spectra of codes from Veronese threefolds

Johnsen, Trygve; Verdure, Hugues (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-10-23)
We study binary linear codes C obtained from the quadric Veronese embedding of P3 in P9 over F2. We show how one can find the higher weight spectra of these codes. Our method will be a study of the Stanley-Reisner rings of a series of matroids associated to each code <i>C</i>.

Johnsen, Trygve; Verdure, Hugues (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-10-18)
We study q-ary linear codes C obtained from Veronese surfaces over finite fields. We show how one can find the higher weight spectra of these codes, or equivalently, the weight distribution of all extension codes of C over all field extensions of the ground field. Our methods will be a study of the Stanley-Reisner rings of a series of matroids associated to each code C.
    • Holdbarhet på klippfisk. Vekst av rødmidd i klippfisk lagret ved forhøyede temperaturer (AP2)

Lorentzen, Grete Elisabeth; Johansen, Jørn-Owe; Breiland, Mette Serine Wesmajervi; Dahl, Reidun Wenche; Sandaker, Elin Kristianne; Ytterstad, Elinor (Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2016-02)
    • Homogeneous integrable Legendrian contact structures in dimension five

Doubrov, Boris; Medvedev, Alexandr; The, Dennis (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-07-04)
We consider Legendrian contact structures on odd-dimensional complex analytic manifolds. We are particularly interested in integrable structures, which can be encoded by compatible complete systems of second order PDEs on a scalar function of many independent variables and considered up to point transformations. Using the techniques of parabolic differential geometry, we compute the associated ...

    • Hyperbolic cone metrics and billiards

Erlandsson, Viveka; Leininger, Christopher J.; Sadanand, Chandrika (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-08-31)
A negatively curved hyperbolic cone metric is called rigid if it is determined (up to isotopy) by the support of its Liouville current, and flexible otherwise. We provide a complete characterization of rigidity and flexibility, prove that rigidity is a generic property, and parameterize the associated deformation space for any flexible metric. As an application, we parameterize the space of ...
