Gaining advantage by winning contests
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-03-20)We consider a principal who faces many identical competitors, and who can distribute a prize fund over two consecutive contests. The winner of contest one gains an advantage in contest two where his effort is more productive than all rivals. We identify a tipping point for the productivity parameter, below which it is optimal for an effort-maximizing principal to place the whole prize in the second ... -
Fishing for an institution-based first-mover advantage: The Norwegian snow crab case
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-06-17)When the first Norwegian commercial catch of snow crabs was taken in the Barents Sea in 2012, an unexpected opportunity arose to create a new, profitable natural resource-based industry. However, hidden under the surface were massive biological, technological, and institutional uncertainties. This study first explores what motivated the entrepreneurs to invest in an industry exposed to extreme ... -
Government-industry dynamics in the development of offshore waste management in Norway: from prescriptive to risk-based regulation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-08-14)Petroleum activities are associated with high risks. In the 1980s, concerns arose about the environmental impacts of ‘normal’ petroleum activity. Regular operations go hand-in-hand with emissions to air and discharges to sea. Both have been subject to extensive regulation since the 1990s. This paper analyzes the design and implementation of the Norwegian system that regulates operational discharges ... -
A Widely Distributed Thraustochytrid Parasite of Diatoms Isolated from the Arctic Represents a gen. and sp. nov.
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-04-06)A unicellular, heterotrophic, eukaryotic parasite was isolated from nearshore Arctic marine sediment in association with the diatom <i>Pleurosigma</i> sp. The parasite possessed ectoplasmic threads that could penetrate diatom frustules. Healthy and reproducing <i>Pleurosigma</i> cultures would begin to collapse within a week following the introduction of this parasite. The parasite (2–10 μm diameter) ... -
Global, regional, and national age-sex specific mortality for 264 causes of death, 1980–2016: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-09-16)<p><i>Background - </i>Monitoring levels and trends in premature mortality is crucial to understanding how societies can address prominent sources of early death. The Global Burden of Disease 2016 Study (GBD 2016) provides a comprehensive assessment of cause-specific mortality for 264 causes in 195 locations from 1980 to 2016. This assessment includes evaluation of the expected epidemiological ... -
Gammaherpesvirus in Cervid Species from Norway: Characterization of a New Virus in Wild and Semi-Domesticated Eurasian Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020)Gammaherpesvirus infections have been described in cervids worldwide, mainly the genera <i>Macavirus</i> or <i>Rhadinovirus</i>. However, little is known about the gammaherpesviruses species infecting cervids in Norway and Fennoscandia. Blood samples from semi-domesticated (<i>n</i> = 39) and wild (<i>n</i> = 35) Eurasian tundra reindeer (<i>Rangifer tarandus tarandus</i>), moose (<i>Alces alces</i>, ... -
Pain Processing in Elite and High-Level Athletes Compared to Non-athletes
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-07-28)<i>Background</i>: Previous studies shows that elite and high-level athletes possess consistently higher pain tolerance to ischemic and cold pain stimulation compared to recreationally active. However, the data previously obtained within this field is sparse and with low consistency.<p><p> <i>Purpose</i>: The aim of the present study was to examine the difference in pain perception between elite ... -
Genotyping of Salmon Gill Poxvirus Reveals One Main Predominant Lineage in Europe, Featuring Fjord- and Fish Farm-Specific Sub-Lineages
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-05-29)Salmon gill poxvirus (SGPV) can cause serious gill disease in Atlantic salmon (<i>Salmo salar</i> L.) and represents a significant problem to aquaculture industries in Northern Europe. Here, a single-tube multi-locus variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) genotyping assay, targeting eight VNTR loci, was developed for studying the epizootiology of SGPV. Through MLVA typing of SGPV ... -
Afro-alpine flagships revisited: Parallel adaptation, intermountain admixture and shallow genetic structuring in the giant senecios (Dendrosenecio)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-03-18)Distantly related lineages of the enigmatic giant rosette plants of tropical alpine environments provide classical examples of convergent adaptation. For the giant senecios (<i>Dendrosenecio</i>), the endemic landmarks of the East African sky islands, it has also been suggested that parallel adaptation has been important for within-lineage differentiation. To test this hypothesis and to address ... -
Scalability of Distributed Version Control Systems
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2017-11-26)<p>Distributed version control systems are popular for storing source code, but they are notoriously ill suited for storing large binary files. <p>We report on the results from a set of experiments designed to characterize the behavior of some widely used distributed version control systems with respect to scaling. The experiments measured commit times and repository sizes when storing single files ... -
Salience in a simple transport market
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-08-04)Psychologists have long since recognized that consumers have limited cognitive ability, and that this prevents them from weighing up all product attributes when making a choice. More recently, a new framework for consumer choice has been developed which takes account of this, by assuming that consumers are drawn to salient features of a product. We apply the framework of salient thinking to a simple ... -
Getting adhesion force maps with an amplitude-modulation AFM in tapping mode
(Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2020-07)Here we demonstrate how to get adhesion force maps with an amplitude-modulation AFM in tapping mode. Our method is tapping mode but it is carried out at ultra-small amplitudes in the presence of surface water layers. The tip is made to vibrated under the water layer in what we call Small Amplitude Small Set-point AM AFM. We show how this is done with an example based on the Cypher scanning probe ... -
CMIP5 model selection for ISMIP6 ice sheet model forcing: Greenland and Antarctica
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-03-06)The ice sheet model intercomparison project for CMIP6 (ISMIP6) effort brings together the ice sheet and climate modeling communities to gain understanding of the ice sheet contribution to sea level rise. ISMIP6 conducts stand-alone ice sheet experiments that use space- and time-varying forcing derived from atmosphere–ocean coupled global climate models (AOGCMs) to reflect plausible trajectories for ... -
Aquaculture, pollution and fishery - dynamics of marine industrial interactions
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-07-10)We model bioeconomic interrelations between a commercial fishery and an aquaculture industry by using a dynamical systems theory approach. The biomass follows a logistic growth where the pollution emerging from aquaculture is accounted for by means of a retardation term. We investigate the existence and stability of the equilibrium states of this model as a function of the growth-retardation parameter ... -
One leaf for all: Chemical traits of single leaves measured at the leaf surface using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-06-10)1. The leaf is an essential unit for measures of plant ecological traits. Yet, measures of plant chemical traits are often achieved by merging several leaves, masking potential foliar variation within and among plant individuals. This is also the case with cost‐effective measures derived using near‐infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). The calibration models developed for converting NIRS spectral ... -

Reconstructing force profiles with an amplitude-modulation AFM in tapping mode
(Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2020-07)Here we demonstrate how to reconstruct force profiles with an amplitude-modulation AFM operated in in standard tapping mode. Our example is based on the Cypher scanning probe microscope from Asylum Research. The method is based on Sader and Katan’s algorithm, but we have implemented an experimental set-up that allows for robust reconstruction. We discuss the details here. -
Getting Hamaker coefficients with an amplitude-modulation AFM in tapping mode
(Research report; Forskningsrapport, 2020-07)We demonstrate how to get Hamaker coefficients with an amplitude-modulation AFM operated in standard tapping mode. The Hamaker coefficient is a physical parameter that provides chemical information about the surface of samples. It is based or emerges from van der Waals forces. We use a Cypher scanning probe microscope from Asylum Research to demonstrate the method. The method is based on the research ... -
Differences in harvesting and marketing strategies between Iceland and Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015)For decades, whitefish industries in Iceland and Norway have produced similar products and have exported to the same global markets. Nevertheless, there are indications that the Icelandic industry has been more profitable than the Norwegian industry over the same time period. Therefore, this study aims to determine if the two competing industries pursue different marketing and harvesting strategies ...
