When Bodies Speak and Words Act - poetry, psychosomatic illness and the lost art of medicine
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2020-04-16)This is a discussion of what poetry has to do with medicine. It is about the psychological necessity and communicative purpose of art, with poetry as an example. It is about what poetry demands of the poet - humility, undogmatic diligence, resilience in the face of complexity, and the ability to think and feel at the same time. It is about a vital service poetry performs for poet and public which ... -

The diagram is based on the multi-polarization parameter called Resonant to Non-resonant signal Damping (RND) introduced by Ivonin et al. ... -
Rising rural body-mass index is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-05-08)Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities. This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity. Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, ... -
Institutionalization, neo-politicization and the politics of defining Sámi research
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-05-02)This article critically examines recent changes in the social terrain of Sámi research in Finland, where the research field is subject to a new wave of academic institutionalization, and where questions regarding “Sáminess” have become particularly prominent. The article argues that in this conjuncture of <i>institutionalization</i> and <i>neo-politicization</i>, definitions of Sámi research which ... -
Possible COLREGs Failures under Digital Helmsman of Autonomous Ships
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-10-19)Autonomous navigation will play an important role in the future of the shipping industry. Hence, this study illustrates several concepts that should support the navigation side in relation to the collision avoidance of autonomous ships. The concept of system intelligence, i.e., cloned by human navigators, as the digital helmsman to navigate future vessels is discussed in the first part of this study. ... -
Begrepet ... -
A large-scale meeting of Nordic and Russian historians, philologists and archaeologists in the Arctic Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)The history of Russia and Norway and their areas in the Arctic and Russian-Norwegian relations are traditionally important for the residents of both states. Opportunities to present new documents and materials, to discuss the significance of centuries-old ties between Russia and Norway, especially in the North, are not provided so often. In early April 2019, a large-scale scientific seminar of Russian ... -
Cerebral cortical dimensions in headache sufferers aged 50-66 years: a population-based imaging study in the Nord-Trondelag Health Study (HUNT-MRI)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-07)Based on previous clinic-based magnetic resonance imaging studies showing regional differences in the cerebral cortex between those with and without headache, we hypothesized that headache sufferers have a decrease in volume, thickness, or surface area in the anterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex, and insula. In addition, exploratory analyses on volume, thickness, and surface area across the ... -
Strategic investments in catch capacity and quotas: How costly is a mismatch for a firm?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-02-08)Despite improved fisheries management, overcapacity is still a major issue in fisheries worldwide. This study investigates the economic effect of a mismatch between catch capacity and quota holdings on the economic performance of fishing boats operating in a system of Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) system. Based on the data of 71 fishing vessels, which constitute the entire fleet of Norwegian seagoing ... -
Incidence of gynecological fistula and its surgical treatment: A national registry-based study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-03-19)<i>Introduction</i> - Gynecological fistula (affecting female genital organs) leads to involuntary loss of urine or feces. In industrialized societies, fistulas occur mostly as complications of surgery, radiation therapy or inflammatory bowel disease. We sought to determine the incidence of gynecological fistula and type of surgical treatment provided in Norway.<p><p> <i>Material and methods</i> ... -
Investigation on heavy metals pollution of municipal refuse leachate from Tromsø landfill, Northern Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)To investigate the heavy metal pollution in leachate from sanitary landfill site of municipal solid waste, a survey was conducted in Tromsø, Northern Norway. Results shows that contents of heavy metals in landfill leachate follow the order Mn>Zn>Ni>Cu>Cr>As>Pb>Cd>Hg, and the order of the risk of different heavy metals is: Mn>Ni>As>Zn>Cr>Pb>Cd>Hg>Cu. The concentrations of Mn and Ni in landfill leachate ... -
A Goal Programming Approach for a Fuzzy Single-Source Capacitated Facility Location Problem
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)In this paper, we present a new mixed-integer linear goal programming (MILGP) model for a fuzzy single-source capacitated facility location problem (F-SSCFLP), in which demands are considered as triangular fuzzy values and capacity of facilities are fuzzy constraints. At first, the basic fuzzy model for the given problem is presented. Then, utilizing goal programming (GP) approach and fuzzy principals ... -
Non-Preemptive Open Shop Scheduling Considering Machine Availability
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)This paper considers a non-preemptive open shop scheduling problem (OSSP), in which machines are not available to process jobs on known periodic interval times resulted from periodic service repair, rest period, and so on. Asymmetric transportation time between machines is considered, which can be different from one job to another. The objective is to minimize the weighted mean completion time (WMCT). ... -

Icelandic permafrost dynamics since the Last Glacial Maximum – model results and geomorphological implications
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-03-14)Iceland’s periglacial realm is one of the most dynamic on the planet, with active geomorphologicalprocesses and high weathering rates of young bedrock resulting in high sediment yields and ongoingmass movement. Permafrost is discontinuous in Iceland’s highlands and mountains over c. 800 m a.s.l,and sporadic in palsa mires in the central highlands. During the late Pleistocene and Holocene, ... -
Risk assessment of wind farm development in ice proven area
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)There many risks associated with wind farms operating in cold harsh areas, a number of these risks is caused by icing. Atmospheric and super-structure icing can cause ice accretion on wind turbines’ structure, and lead to public safety risks caused by ice throw and the failure of wind turbine’s components. Other risks can affect wind farm’s maintenance crew and their activities. Such risks are ... -
Iron cycling in Arctic methane seeps
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-03-26)Anoxic marine sediments contribute a significant amount of dissolved iron (Fe2+) to the ocean which is crucial for the global carbon cycle. Here, we investigate iron cycling in four Arctic cold seeps where sediments are anoxic and sulfidic due to the high rates of methane-fueled sulfate reduction. We estimated Fe2+ diffusive fluxes towards the oxic sediment layer to be in the ... -
Pinngortitaq – a place of becoming
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-01)Arctic ecosystems are on the verge of changes that are unprecedented in both magnitude and velocity. We stress that statements of a changing climate and environment have ambiguous definitions in both theoretical and metaphorical senses. Inuit have embraced the idea of an environment in a process of Pinngortitaq – a place of becoming – rather than a process of changing. In this note, we accentuate ... -
