Dynamic evolutions of Bohm sheaths and pre-sheaths
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-02-16)The time evolutions of the Bohm sheath and the related pre-sheath are analyzed as an initial value problem. The standard classical fluid model of a collisionless plasma is used with cold ions and Boltzmann distributed electrons. Numerical solutions of the basic equations show that a stationary plasma sheath itself is established within a few ion plasma periods. It is demonstrated analytically that ... -
Dose-Response Effects of MittEcho, a Measurement Feedback System, in an Indicated Mental Health Intervention for Children in Municipal and School Services in Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-05-29)Including routine client feedback can increase the effectiveness of mental health interventions for children, especially when implemented as intended. Rate of implementation, or dose, of such feedback interventions has been shown to moderate results in some studies. Variation in implementation and use of client feedback may also contribute to the mixed results observed within the feedback ... -
Stochastic modeling of blob-like plasma filaments in the scrape-off layer: Correlated amplitudes and velocities
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-04-19)A stochastic model for a superposition of uncorrelated pulses with a random distribution of amplitudes, sizes, and velocities is analyzed. The pulses are assumed to move radially with fixed shape and amplitudes decreasing exponentially in time due to linear damping. The pulse velocities are taken to be time-independent but randomly distributed. The implications of a broad distribution of pulse ... -
Status epilepticus in POLG disease: a large multinational study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-06-01)We aimed to provide a detailed phenotypic description of status epilepticus (SE) in a large cohort of patients with POLG disease and identify prognostic biomarkers to improve the management of this life-threatening condition. In a multinational, retrospective study with data on patients with POLG disease from seven European countries, we identified those who had SE. The age of SE onset, accompanying ... -
Suspicious minds and views of fairness
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-01-06)Do people with different views of what is fair attribute different intentions to actions? In a novel experimental design, participants were significantly more likely to attribute a no-redistribution vote to selfishness if they considered redistribution as being fair. I define this—attributing actions that do not adhere to one’s own fairness view to selfishness—as suspicious attribution. I develop ... -
TBK1 is ubiquitinated by TRIM5α to assemble mitophagy machinery
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-05-29)Ubiquitination of mitochondrial proteins provides a basis for the downstream recruitment of mitophagy machinery, yet whether ubiquitination of the machinery itself contributes to mitophagy is unknown. Here, we show that K63-linked polyubiquitination of the key mitophagy regulator TBK1 is essential for its mitophagy functions. This modification is catalyzed by the ubiquitin ligase TRIM5a and is ... -
Deep learning to extract the meteorological by-catch of wildlife cameras
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-09)Microclimate—proximal climatic variation at scales of metres and minutes—can exacerbate or mitigate the impacts of climate change on biodiversity. However, most microclimate studies are temperature centric, and do not consider meteorological factors such as sunshine, hail and snow. Meanwhile, remote cameras have become a primary tool to monitor wild plants and animals, even at micro-scales, and ... -
Educational gradient in hip fracture incidence in Norway. The Norwegian Epidemiologic Osteoporosis Studies (NOREPOS)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-06-25)Summary Examining fracture dynamics by socioeconomic status may inform healthcare and prevention. We found a higher risk of hip fracture in men and women with lower educational level in Norway. However, by age 90+years, the cumulative incidence was higher in those with higher education, due to their higher life expectancy.<p> <p>Purpose Socioeconomic gradients are seen for several health outcomes ... -
Plugging of pipes by cohesive particles. Computed tomography investigation and theoretical analysis
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-05-09)Flow regimes leading to clogging of pipes exist for most multiphase flows with cohesive particles. Although plugging is critical in many industrial and medical applications, there are few records describing the details of the process. To address the problem, we conduct a computed tomography (CT) study of plugging in a cohesive ice slurry. We run experiments for ice concentration of 15%, Re∼3500, ... -
Language change in Japanese–English bilingual returnee children over the course of five years: Evidence from accent-rating
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-03-14)Few studies have examined global foreign accent (GFA) in bilingual children, and little is known about how GFA changes over time and what factors determine change. Here, we examine GFA trajectories in Japanese–English bilingual returnees (Japanese children who returned to Japan after having lived in a majority English environment for several years). In two accent-rating tasks, first language ... -
Social inequality in prevalence of NCD risk factors: a cross-sectional analysis from the population-based Tromsø Study 2015-2016
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-04-30)Objective We aimed to examine associations between educational level, serving as an indicator of socioeconomic position, and prevalence of WHO-established leading behavioural and biological risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), in middle-aged to older women and men.<p> <p>Design Population-based cross-sectional study. <p>Setting All inhabitants of the municipality of Tromsø, Norway, ... -
Inflammatory responses in Atlantic lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) after intraperitoneal injection of a vaccine against Aeromonas salmonicida and Vibrio salmonicida at different water temperatures
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-16)Studying inflammatory responses induced by vaccination can contribute to a more detailed understanding of underlying immune mechanisms in lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus). Tissue samples from lumpfish intraperitoneally immunized with a divalent oil-adjuvanted vaccine (Aeromonas salmonicida and Vibrio salmonicida) at water temperatures of 5, 10, and 15°C were collected at 630 day degrees and 18 weeks ... -
Characterization of cellulases from softening fruit for enzymatic depolymerization of cellulose
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-14)Cellulose is a major renewable resource for a wide variety of sustainable industrial products. However, for its utilization, finding new efficient enzymes for plant cell wall depolymerization is crucial. In addition to microbial sources, cellulases also exist in plants, however, are less studied. Fleshy fruit ripening includes enzymatic cell wall hydrolysis, leading to tissue softening. Therefore, ... -
Colony-forming and single-cell picocyanobacteria nitrogen acquisition strategies and carbon fixation in the brackish Baltic Sea
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-07-22)Picocyanobacteria are widespread and globally significant primary producers. In brackish waters, picocyanobacterial populations are composed of diverse species with both single-cell and colony-forming lifestyles. Compared to their marine counterparts, brackish picocyanobacteria are less well characterized and the focus of research has been weighted toward single-cell picocyanobacteria. Here, we ... -
Melatonin and Seasonal Synchrony in Mammals
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2024-08-12)In mammals, seasonal opportunities and challenges are anticipated through programmed changes in physiology and behavior. Appropriate anticipatory timing depends on synchronization to the external solar year, achieved through the use of day length (photoperiod) as a synchronizing signal. In mammals, nocturnal production of melatonin by the pineal gland is the key hormonal mediator of photoperiodic ... -
