Benthic foraminifera as bio-indicators of chemical and physical stressors in Hammerfest harbor (Northern Norway)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-10-01)We investigated benthic foraminiferal assemblages in contaminated sediments in a subarctic harbor of northern Norway to assess their utility as indicators of anthropogenic impacts. Sediments in the harbor are repositories for POPs and heavy metals supplied through discharges from industry and shipping activities. Sediment contaminant concentrations are at moderate to poor ecological quality ... -
Nonstationary and Chaotic Dynamics in Age-Structured Population Models
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-08-06)The dynamics from nonlinear discrete age-structured population models is under consideration. Focus is on bifurcations, as well as nonstationary and chaotic dynamics. We also explore different mechanisms which may lead to periodic phenomena. Some new results are also presented, in particular from models where both fecundity and survival terms contain nonlinear elements. -
Prognostic significance of S100A4-expression and subcellular localization in early-stage breast cancer
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-01-05)Purpose:
Prognostic factors are useful in order to identify early-stage breast cancer patients who might benefit from adjuvant treatment. The metastasis-promoting protein S100A4 has previously been associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. The protein is expressed in diverse subcellular compartments, including the cytoplasm, extracellular space, and nucleus. Nuclear expression ... -
Gatekeepers to the effects of climate warming? Niche construction restricts plant community changes along a temperature gradient
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-06-20)Organisms that modify the environment (niche constructors) are likely candidates to mediate the effects of climate warming. Here we assess tundra plant community changes along a temperature gradient and how these are modified in the presence of the common allelopathic dwarf shrub Empetrum nigrum and the large herbivore Rangifer tarandus. 2 We developed a structural equation model based on data ... -
Carbon stocks and fluxes in the high latitudes: Using site-level data to evaluate Earth system models
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-11-17)It is important that climate models can accurately simulate the terrestrial carbon cycle in the Arctic due to the large and potentially labile carbon stocks found in permafrost-affected environments, which can lead to a positive climate feedback, along with the possibility of future carbon sinks from northward expansion of vegetation under climate warming. Here we evaluate the simulation of tundra ... -
The influence of solar system oscillation on the variability of the total solar irradiance
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-08-30)Total solar irradiance (TSI) is the primary quantity of energy that is provided to the Earth. The properties of the TSI variability are critical for understanding the cause of the irradiation variability and its expected influence on climate variations. A deterministic property of TSI variability can provide information about future irradiation variability and expected long-term climate variation, ... -
Rangifer management controls a climate-sensitive tundra state transition
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-09-04)Rangifer (caribou/reindeer) management has been suggested to mitigate the temperature- driven transition of Arctic tundra into a shrubland state, yet how this happens is uncertain. Here we study this much focused ecosystem state transition in riparian areas, where palatable willows (Salix) are dominant tall shrubs and highly responsive to climate change. For the state transition to take place, ... -
Whats in a wiki? Issues of agency in light of student teachers' encounters with wiki technology
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017)This paper reports from a collaborative creative writing project in teacher education that involved the use of wikis. A fortunate match between task and technology created much enthusiasm among student teachers, and – as evident from an analysis of their logs – a growing awareness of technology as something more than a tool neatly adapted to particular purposes. In interviews conducted at a later ... -
Genetics redraws pelagic biogeography of Calanus
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-12-20)Planktonic copepods of the genus Calanus play a central role in North Atlantic/Arctic marine food webs. Here, using molecular markers, we redrew the distributional ranges of Calanus species inhabiting the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and revealed much wider and more broadly overlapping distributions than previously described. The Arctic shelf species, C. glacialis, dominated the zooplankton ... -
Mindfulness training for chronic fatigue syndrome: a pilot study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017)Background:
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition characterized by persistent and unexplained fatigue that may result in severe impairment of daily functioning. Currently, there is no curative treatment for CFS, and many patients experience the existing interventions as ineffective. Thus, there is a need for new approaches that target psychological maintenance factors and coping. ... -
Body size indicators and risk of gallbladder cancer: Pooled analysis of individual-level data from 19 prospective cohort studies
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-03-17)Background: There are few established risk factors for gallbladder cancer beyond gallstones. Recent studies suggest a higher risk with high body mass index (BMI), an indicator of general heaviness, but evidence from other body size measures is lacking.
Methods: Associations of adult BMI, young adult BMI, height, adult weight gain, waist circumference (WC), waist–height ratio (WHtR), hip ... -
Associations between sun exposure and other lifestyle variables in Swedish women
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-07-14)Purpose:
Sun exposure is associated with risk of several chronic diseases including cancer. The study aim is to investigate whether sun behaviours are related to other lifestyle risk factors of cancer.
Methods:
We analysed data collected in 2003-2004 by self-completed questionnaire from 34,402 Swedish women aged 40-61 years, who comprised 70% of a cohort of originally recruited from ... -
Coffee, tea and melanoma risk: findings from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-02-20)In vitro and animal studies suggest that bioactive constituents of coffee and tea may have anticarcinogenic effects against cutaneous melanoma; however, epidemiological evidence is limited to date. We examined the relationships between coffee (total, caffeinated or decaffeinated) and tea consumption and risk of melanoma in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). EPIC ... -
Physical activity and risk of endometrial cancer in the Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-01-20)Few studies have investigated the association between endometrial cancer and physical activity (PA) using repeated measures of PA and different subtypes of endometrial cancer. We aimed to investigate the association between endometrial cancer and PA level at two points in time in women with different body mass index (BMI) profiles, and to calculate the population attributable fraction (PAF) of ... -
Zooplankton excretion metabolites stimulate Southern Ocean phytoplankton growth
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-04-24)Warming over Antarctica is leading to changes in the zooplankton communities inhabiting the Southern Ocean. It has been observed that zooplankton not only regulates phytoplankton through grazing, but also through the recycling of nutrients that are essential for phytoplankton growth. In this way, the effects of warming on zooplankton populations will change the amount or proportion at which recycled ... -
Data driven polypharmacological drug design for lung cancer: analyses for targeting ALK, MET, and EGFR
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-07-04)Drug design of protein kinase inhibitors is now greatly enabled by thousands of publicly available X-ray structures, extensive ligand binding data, and optimized scaffolds coming off patent. The extensive data begin to enable design against a spectrum of targets (polypharmacology); however, the data also reveal heterogeneities of structure, subtleties of chemical interactions, and apparent inconsistencies ... -
High-throughput sequencing of African chikanda cake highlights conservation challenges in orchids
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-04-01)Chikanda is a traditional dish made with wild-harvested ground orchid tubers belonging to three orchidioid genera, Disa, Satyrium and Habenaria, all of which are CITES appendix II-listed. Identification of collected orchid tubers is very difficult and documentation of constituent species in prepared chikanda has hitherto been impossible. Here amplicon metabarcoding was used in samples of six prepared ... -

Jeg relaterer problemene på arbeidsmarkedet (for kandidater på høyere og lavere akademisk nivå) til svakheter innen utdanningssystemet og akademisk publisering. Avslutningsvis tar jeg til orde for en ... -
Azithromycin versus placebo for the treatment of HIV-associated chronic lung disease in children and adolescents (BREATHE trial): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-12-28)Background
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related chronic lung disease (CLD) among children is associated with substantial morbidity, despite antiretroviral therapy. This may be a consequence of repeated respiratory tract infections and/or dysregulated immune activation that accompanies HIV infection. Macrolides have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and we hypothesised that ...
