Downscaling Cosmological Landscapes: from Early to Mid-Holocene Rock Art in Northern Norway
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)The rock art of northern Norway is well-known, not least due to the UNESCO World Heritage sites at Alta dating back to c. 5200 cal BC. It is perhaps less well-known that northern Norway also has earlier rock art dating back to c. 9000 cal BC. While the early phase of rock art is dominated by large, natural sized animals such as elk, reindeer, bear and whale in a naturalistic style, the later period ... -
Dannelse i nord.
Forty Years of Arctic Primary Care Research on the Early Diagnosis of Cancer
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)Usually, before a patient with cancer can be treated in a hospital, a general practitioner (GP) must suspect the diagnosis and refer the patient. GPs often worry that they could have done better for some of their cancer patients. Had there been an unreasonable delay of diagnosis? In the arctic, rural/urban city of Tromsø, this question became the subject of several scientific articles. Symptoms was ... -
Covid-19 and Norwegian Civil Justice
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)Norwegian courts have been digitised at an unprecedented pace during the Covid-19 pandemic. Because case management hearings were already conducted remotely and expert witnesses were often examined remotely, the transition to fully remote hearings has been fairly smooth in Norway, as will be explained in Section 2. However, the implementation of new technology has entailed some difficulties, in ... -
Can we trust what humans report? – myths and realities
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)Human information is crucial for efforts in the field of buildings, health and experiences. Despite this, there is strikingly little focus on how it is created and may be understood. Division between e.g. “subjective”/ “feelings” vs. “objective”/ “facts” and thinking that e.g. questionnaires produce “facts” are examples of popular ideas more based on cultural myths than science. Traditionally, ... -
Understanding “Symptoms Associated with Environmental Factors” (SAEF) in buildings; e.g. “sick building syndrome”, “electromagnetic hypersensitivity” and “multiple chemical sensitivity”
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)The field of buildings, health and human experiences may be divided between conditions (a) with scientific support for causal relations between exposure and health effects, e.g. dampness in buildings and asthma exacerbation; (b) lacking such scientific support, e.g. “sick building syndrome” (SBS). b) conditions are often disregarded as imaginations, psychogenic etc. Traditional ideas are (1) ... -
Photographic Portraits as Dialogical Contact Zones: The Portrait Gallery in Sápmi – Becoming a Nation at The Arctic University Museum of Norway
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)The point of departure for this essay is a series of eleven contemporary photographic portraits of Sámi people in large formats presented in the exhibition Sápmi – Becoming a Nation (2000-) at the Arctic University Museum of Norway, in Tromsø.1 The photographs were commissioned by the curators, and they were shot by documentary photographer, photojournalist, and filmmaker Harry Johansen (b. 1958). ... -
Syntax of Heritage Languages
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)In research on heritage speakers, it is often observed that areas of core syntax tend to be resilient and resemble the relevant baseline. This paper discusses this generalization and provides examples of areas that tend to be resilient and areas that are vulnerable. Research into the syntax of heritage speakers has tended to focus on certain areas, such as argument structure and the representation ... -
Real-Time Detection of Events in Soccer Videos using 3D Convolutional Neural Networks
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2020)In this paper, we present an algorithm for automatically detecting events in soccer videos using 3D convolutional neural networks. The algorithm uses a sliding window approach to scan over a given video to detect events such as goals, yellow/red cards, and player substitutions. We test the method on three different datasets from SoccerNet, the Swedish Allsvenskan, and the Norwegian Eliteserien. ... -
Detecting the linear and non-linear causal links for disturbances in the power grid
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)Unscheduled power disturbances cause severe consequences for customers and grid operators. To avoid suchevents, it is important to identify the causes and localize the sources of the disturbances in the power distribution network. In this work, we focus on a specific power grid in the Arctic region of Northern Norway that experiences an increased frequency of failures of unspecified origin. -
Adjektivkongruens i amerikanorsk
Decolonized Research-Storying Bringing Indigenous Ontologies and Care into the Practices of Research Writing
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021-04-24)In this chapter we want to bring Indigenous ontologies and ways of knowing into the practices of decolonized research-storying. One implication about that is bringing Eana, Earth in North Sámi, as a narrator into the text. This text is a collaborative endeavour, where we write about and with our encountering and living with/in Indigenous societies and ontologies. Care becomes present both in creating ... -

These experiments will collect large ... -
Particle Filter Based Ship State and Parameter Estimation for Vessel Maneuvers
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)Vessel states and parameters estimation is essential for maneuvering and collision avoidance. This study presents an application of particle filter (PF) algorithm to estimate vessel states and parameters. Particularly, to reduce the impact of the vessel’s underactuated property and complex environmental disturbance, the estimation process contains a kinematic curvilinear motion model that describes ...
