This thesis is implemented with two main purposes: (1) reviewing the literature on efficiency and DEA methods, (2) applying DEA methods to examine efficiency of the shrimp farms in Binh Dai district, Ben Tre, Vietnam. In thesis, therefore, after related literature is reviewed, a case study of measuring the performance of shrimp farms in the study area is implemented. Interesting findings have been found from the study. Theoretical literature on efficiency and DEA methods and their worldwide applications reflected that the application of DEA for measuring aquaculture performance in Vietnam absolutely have chances to be applied successfully. Results from the study also show that the shrimp farms are quite efficient with rather high purely technical and scale efficiency level. However, significant possibilities to increase efficiency levels of those farms have been still identified. Certain types of hypothesis tests has been performed and implemented to test relationships, factors related to inputs, output and efficiency of the production process. The results of the hypothesis tests are interesting and suggested to be further examined in near future. Results and information mentioned in the study are expected to be perfect foundations for a further comprehensive study to cover more issues related to aquaculture performance.
