Introduction:
The role of public libraries in contributing to the resilience of their local communities is an underdeveloped area of research. This paper introduces, explores and develops the concept of community resilience in a public library setting.
Analysis:
The paper opens the broader literature on community resilience and analyses the specific theme of public libraries and community resilience, focusing on examining social capital as an adaptive mechanism for community resilience and the role of public libraries in generating social capital.
Results:
The contribution of public libraries to specified community resilience and adaptive capacities in disaster recovery is documented in a small body of research. Social capital is an adaptive capacity that is applicable for engaging with endogenous disruptive events or exogenous shocks and are as such a general resilience adaptive capacity while also important for specified resilience adaptations pertaining to predictable disruptions.
Conclusion:
Public libraries are community institutions contributing to community resilience. There is a lack of empirical research on the wide range of adaptive processes by which public libraries potentially contribute to general resilience and to specified resilience. Especially the concepts of general resilience and information resilience seem promising in relation to the community role of public libraries.

The relationship between resilience and loneliness elucidated by a Danish version of the resilience scale for adults
Jakobsen, Ida Skytte; Madsen, Lykke Mie Riis; Mau, Martin; Hjemdal, Odin; Friborg, Oddgeir (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2020-12-10)Background: Research on the relationship between resilience and loneliness is sparse. The construct of resilience has been conceptualized in multiple ways, including the measurement of resilience. The Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) is a measure of protective factors. The present study examined whether resiliency moderates any negative relationship between loneliness and mental health and ... -
Cooperation and resilience in remote communities. A case study of cooperation and resilience for emergency preparedness organizations on Svalbard
Svane, Peder (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2019-05-31)This study seeks to look at how cooperation can facilitate resilience for emergency preparedness organization in remote communities, illustrated through the emergency preparedness actors in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Advocates of resilience argue that in a high risk environment, resilience is necessary for organization to avoid potential disasters and to prevent smaller events from escalating (Weick & ... -
Measuring Resilience Across Australia and Norway: Validation and Psychometric Properties of the English Version of the Resilience Scale for Adults.
Anyan, Frederick; Hjemdal, Odin; Bizumic, Boris; Friborg, Oddgeir (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2019-04-05)Resilience has become increasingly important in clinical and health psychology, but only few scales have received good psychometric ratings for assessing various outcomes of resilience. The Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) is one of the best psychometrically rated scales and has been validated among Norwegian samples. The purpose of this study was to explore the construct validity of the RSA in an ...
