Abstract
Spray duration and frequency are essential parameters to consider when estimating ice accretion on marine structures. The existing expressions for these parameters are derived from limited data, given the challenges in field measurement and the absence of suitable techniques. This paper introduces a novel device utilizing capacitive sensors to accurately measure spray duration and frequency. The device operates autonomously, collecting data at a 5 Hz frequency, and is adaptable for installation on various vessels and structures. Testing at a fish farm in Northern Norway showcases the device's capability for comprehensive data collection, which can contribute to developing a robust spray flux formula. Ultimately, this can potentially improve marine icing forecasting, enhancing the safety of marine operations in cold regions.
