Life through an Ediacaran glaciation: Shale- and diamictite-hosted organic-walled microfossil assemblages from the late Neoproterozoic of the Tanafjorden area, northern Norway
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-05)New organic-walled microfossil (OWM) assemblages are reported from upper Neoproterozoic glacial and interglacial siliciclastic deposits in Finnmark, northern Norway. A nearly continuous sedimentary succession of the Vestertana Group contains two glaciogenic units, the Smalfjorden and Mortensnes formations, interpreted as end-Cryogenian Marinoan and Ediacaran glaciations, respectively. We investigated ... -
Historical RNA expression profiles from the extinct Tasmanian tiger
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-07-18)Paleogenomics continues to yield valuable insights into the evolution, population dynamics, and ecology of our ancestors and other extinct species. However, DNA sequencing cannot reveal tissue-specific gene expression, cellular identity, or gene regulation, which are only attainable at the transcriptional level. Pioneering studies have shown that useful RNA can be extracted from ancient specimens ... -
A Tender World - Transience, Control and the Inevitable
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2021-12-09)In the thesis, I attempt to investigate uncertainty and change, seen through the concepts of tenderness or vulnerability. Using examples from movements and practices like Deep Adaptation and Deep Listening, I also link this perspective to my recent art practice during the MA studies at UIT through concrete projects, and methodolgies used. -
A New Stenothoid (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Stenothoidae) from a Shallow Water Hydroid Polyp in British Columbia, Canada
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023)A new stenothoid species is described from a hydroid polyp in British Columbia, Canada. The new species is provisionally assigned to Metopa as M. insolita sp. nov., pending revision of this genus. -
The World Amphipoda Database: History and Progress
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-12-06)We provide an overview of the World Amphipoda Database (WAD), a global speciesdatabase that is part of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). Launched in 2013, the databasecontains entries for over 10,500 accepted species names. Edited currently by 31 amphipod taxonomists, following WoRMS priorities, the WAD has at least one editor per major group. All accepted speciesare checked by the editors, ... -
Accurate microRNA annotation of animal genomes using trained covariance models of curated microRNA complements in MirMachine
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-06-23)The annotation of microRNAs depends on the availability of transcriptomics data and expert knowledge. This has led to a gap between the availability of novel genomes and high-quality microRNA complements. Using >16,000 microRNAs from the manually curated microRNA gene database MirGeneDB, we generated trained covariance models for all conserved microRNA families. These models are available in our ... -
The prelude to industrial whaling: Identifying the targets of ancient European whaling using zooarchaeology and collagen mass-peptide fingerprinting
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-09-13)Taxonomic identification of whale bones found during archaeological excavations is problematic due to their typically fragmented state. This difficulty limits understanding of both the past spatio-temporal distributions of whale populations and of possible early whaling activities. To overcome this challenge, we performed zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry on an unprecedented 719 archaeological and ... -
Skalalinjer II - over ulike typer firklanger

«No Delay?»
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-10-25)“No Delay?” – Online teaching using low latency technology. Playing music together using low latency technology has been possible for some years now, provided fast and robust digital networks. The accessibility of low latency networks has been limited, and the available software has been complicated to install and use. At the music conservatory in Tromsø, associate professor Geir Davidsen has ... -

Artsgruppeomtale tovinger (Diptera). Norsk rødliste for arter 2021. Artsdatabanken.
Choices and omissions of knowledge and social impact in Finnish committee reports on Sámi policies
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)In Finland, the involvement of scholars in politics has been particularly strong: scholars and professors have occupied positions in high politics, produced research that was meant as a direct comment on topical political debates, and been active in civil society (Häggman, 2012). In addition to advising high politics and acting in civil society, the Finnish committee institution, a third emerging ... -
Photographic Portraits as Dialogical Contact Zones: The Portrait Gallery in Sápmi – Becoming a Nation at The Arctic University Museum of Norway
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2021)The point of departure for this essay is a series of eleven contemporary photographic portraits of Sámi people in large formats presented in the exhibition Sápmi – Becoming a Nation (2000-) at the Arctic University Museum of Norway, in Tromsø.1 The photographs were commissioned by the curators, and they were shot by documentary photographer, photojournalist, and filmmaker Harry Johansen (b. 1958). ... -

Studies on the complex Warnowiaceae (Dinophyceae) I. Lohmann’s Pouchetia parva refound and renamed Nematodinium parvum comb. nov. (= Warnowia parva)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2023-09-08)The dinoflagellate family Warnowiaceae has often been considered to include some of the most complex cells among the protists. The number of described species is around 40, but both the species and generic concepts are in need of revision. Warnowiaceans are often fragile and readily change morphology under the light microscope, and they are usually regarded to be rare. They are particularly famous ... -
Shotgun-sequencing of plant DNA: Selection og material and methods
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2017)Initially, rbcLaand ITS2 were PCR amplified and Sanger sequenced for 564 species from 1900 specimens. To increase the amount of the genome covered, shotgun sequencing of 1670 species is in progress. Our Sanger analyses had a success rate of 74% and 85% for ITS2 and rbcLa, respectively. Overall success rate of Sanger sequencing decreased with later collection date in the year. Preliminary results of ... -
Life history of Leptagonus decagonus (Atlantic poacher) in Svalbard waters
(Conference object; Konferansebidrag, 2012-04)
The demersal fish species Leptagonus decagonus (Atlantic poacher) is a commonly encountered species on the continental shelf in the Barents Sea and around Svalbard, but little is known about the life-history and population traits of the species in Svalbard waters. It is therefore important to investigate this species to understand its importance in the ecosystem.
A total of 80 specimens ...
