Die mehrfache Vorfeldbesetzung im Deutschen
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2012-05-31)This master thesis discusses the unusual phenomenon of multiple constituents in German verb second sentences. The approach is based on the topological field model. After dividing apparent multiple fronting from actual multiple fronting, several example sentences are discussed. For the analysis of two arguments in front of the finite verb a brief survey confirming the grammatically judgment completes ... -

"Engelsk er ikke nok i reiselivsbransjen" : eine Studie zur Schülermotivation für das Deutschlernen unter Berücksichtigung der Tourismusbranche in Tromsø
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2012-05)Norwegian students become less and less motivated to take German as a foreign language while Spanish, supposedly easier to learn and more enjoyable, becomes more popular. Simultaneously, the growing Norwegian tourist industry has an increasing demand for qualified workers with German language skills. This thesis analyzes the above thematic by questioning high school students on their attitude ... -
Why build Dewey numbers? The remediation of the Dewey Decimal Classification system
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2012)Correct Dewey classification is demanding and time consuming. Many of the challenges with the Dewey system are related to locating and interpreting notes (i.e. classification guidelines), and number building. Today’s Dewey structure is a result of more than 100 years of optimizing a comprehensive classification system to the printed book medium. In order to limit the system into a “manageable” size, ... -
Vidare blir ho gjerne ... -
What is a document institution? A case study from the South Sami community
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2012)The Sámis are the indigenous population of Northern Scandinavia. When the oppressive policy against the Sámi population in Norway was lightened during the 1960s, many Sámi communities established language and cultural centers for documentation and development of their language and cultural heritage as the oral tradition lost its ground in the modernization process. This paper aims to discuss how ... -
Ternary rhythm
(Chapter; Bokkapittel, 2011)Most languages with iterative stress patterns show a simple rhythmic alternation between stressed and unstressed syllables. But in a few cases, stress appears not on every second syllable, but rather on every third one. Patterns of this nature reveal the phenomenon of ternary rhythm. -

Filmmusikken i Nanook of the North : fra kompilasjon til partitur
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2012)The article starts with the film's premiere in New York in 1922. With help of 2 cuesheets - probably compiled in 1922 - the music of one scene ("Winter") is examined, before the article takes a look into 2 original scores composed by Stanley Silvermanand Timothy Brock for either VHS or DVD editions of the film. It turns out that these original scores give much more priority to the pictures than the ... -
In support of the full access full transfer hypothesis : evidence from error patterns in the second language acquisition of English articles
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2011-12)The English article system is complicated for L2 learners. Article errors usually happen in L2 article acquisition. Article errors are not random. The two main error patterns are article overuse and article omission. This thesis argues that the Full Access Full Transfer hypothesis (FAFT) can account for these article errors. The Fluctuation Hypothesis is proposed to address article overuse in L2 ... -
Distribution of two semelfactives in Russian : -nu- and -anu-
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2012)Russian semelfactive verbs formed with the suffix -nu- are well-known in the literature (Isachenko 1960; Maslov 1948, 1965; Zaliznjak & Šmelev 2000). However, the distribution between two semelfactive suffixes -nu- and -anuis less studied. Makarova & Janda (2009, 90) suggest that “there is no clear trend concerning the frequency of -nu- vs. -anu-”, so the nature of the distribution between the two ... -

The interplay of synonymy and polysemy : the case of arrojar, echar, lanzar and tirar
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2012-05)The knowledge associated with lexical items can be seen as including relations of meaning across words and relations of meaning within a single word. Words that share a similarity of meaning are said to be synonyms. A word that has multiple meanings is termed polysemous. This study focuses on a set of Spanish verbs that exhibit both these features: arrojar, echar, lanzar and tirar (all can be glossed ... -

Icelandic Case and the Structure of Events
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2002)I argue in this paper for a novel analysis of case in Icelandic, with implications for case theory in general. I argue that structural case is the manifestation on the noun phrase of features which are semantically interpretable on verbal projections. Thus, Icelandic case does not encode features of noun phrase interpretation, but it is not uninterpretable either; case is properly seen as reflecting ... -
Slavic prefixes inside and outside VP
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2004)Most Slavic prefixes can be assigned to one of two large categories, lexical and superlexical. The lexical prefixes are like Germanic particles, in having resultative meanings, often spatial, but often idiosyncratic. The superlexical prefixes are like adverbs or auxiliary verbs, having aspectual and quantificational meanings. I present a syntactic account of the two types of prefix, arguing that the ... -
Limits on P: filling in holes vs. falling in holes
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2003)All Germanic languages make extensive use of verb-particle combinations (known as separable-prefix verbs in the OV languages). I show some basic differences here distinguishing the Scandinavian type from the OV West Germanic languages, with English superficially patterning with Scandinavian but actually manifesting a distinct type. Specifically, I argue that the P projection is split into p and P ...
