    • Successes and shortcomings of phonological accounts of Scandinavian object shift

Lyskawa, Paulina; Sandsted, Jade; Visser, Eline; Young, Nathan Joel; Lundquist, Björn (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022)
Object shift (OS) is a word order phenomenon in Scandinavian languages where under some circumstances the object appears before a sentential adverb. Despite the frequent assumptions that word order is determined in syntax, and despite the link of OS and syntactic phenomena like V2, there is no consensus that OS is a syntactic phenomenon. Particularly, it has been observed that OS targets specifically ...
    • Does race impact speech perception? An account of accented speech in two different multilingual locales

Kutlu, Ethan; Tiv, Mehrgol; Wulff, Stefanie; Titone, Debra (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-01-28)
Upon hearing someone’s speech, a listener can access information such as the speaker’s age, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and their linguistic background. However, an open question is whether living in diferent locales modulates how listeners use these factors to assess speakers’ speech. Here, an audio-visual test was used to measure whether listeners’ accentedness judgments and intelligibility ...
    • Decision-making depends on language: A meta-analysis of the Foreign Language Effect

Del Maschio, Nicola; Crespi, Federico; Peressotti, Francesca; Abutalebi, Jubin; Sulpizio, Simone (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-02-02)
In the present meta-analysis, we investigated the robustness and the magnitude of the Foreign Language Effect (FLE) – that is, the putative effect of language context (native versus foreign language) on decision-making. We also investigated whether the FLE is moderated by language experience – measured by second language age of acquisition and proficiency – or by methodological choices – the types ...
    • Exploring nuance in both experience and adaptation: Commentary on Titone and Tiv (2022)

DeLuca, Vincent (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-07-01)
The keynote article by Titone & Tiv (2022) represents a key step forward in characterizing and quantifying bilingual experience, and how this may be leveraged to examine neurocognitive outcomes. The framework takes a novel multi-leveled approach to capturing and describing language experience. The first level handles the direct language use dynamics of a given individual or ego-driven language dynamics. ...
    • Acquisition of Verbal Aspect in L2 English by advanced learners with L1 Russian and L1 Norwegian: A web-based eye tracking study

Ermolina, Iuliia (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-30)
It is well known that the similarities between L1 and L2 (also L3, etc.) facilitate language acquisition, whereas significant differences between them result in non-facilitating effects. These effects are known as Cross-Linguistic Influence (CLI). The main objective of the current study is to investigate the CLI, experienced by high proficient L2 English speakers when the grammatical aspect is being ...
    • Svalbard w filmach polskich z lat 50. i 60. XX w. Perspektywa geografii wizualnej

Rogatchevski, Andrei; Szymala, Jacek (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-07-11)
We propose to look at the 1950s–60s Polish documentaries about Svalbard through the prism of visual geography. We analyse the films by Włodzimierz Puchalski and Jarosław Brzozowski. Svalbard’s landscape appears as a character in these films. The films have not been considered from a geographical viewpoint before, and some of them have not yet been studied at all.
    • Comparing Island Effects for Different Dependency Types in Norwegian

Kobzeva, Anastasia; Sant, Charlotte; Robbins, Parker T.; Vos, Myrte Titia; Lohndal, Terje; Kush, Dave Whitney (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-07-29)
Recent research suggests that island effects may vary as a function of dependency type, potentially challenging accounts that treat island effects as reflecting uniform constraints on all filler-gap dependency formation. Some authors argue that cross-dependency variation is more readily accounted for by discourse-functional constraints that take into account the discourse status of both the ...

    • Rupture: Exposing the Instability of a State Apparatus Through Poetic Descriptions of a Natural World

Dwyer, William F. III (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-23)
The thesis uses the critical lens of Deleuze and Guattari on the poetry of George Gordon Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Bobby Sands to illustrate the way natural elements deconstruct the power of a state apparatus by exposing it as a temporary social construct. I argue that literature creates the idea of a nation by perpetuating narratives that divide the world into borders; conversely, literature ...
    • These Monstrous, Decadent New Women. Exploring the Death of Dangerous Femininities in the Fin de Siècle

Jupiter, Michael Xavier Andrew (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-15)
Engagement with the Gothic often brings readers into the realms of the unknown and that which is difficult to represent. In this thesis, I intend to convey to you the fin de siècle’s fascination with representing powerful women as monstrous, something that was analogous with the representations of the New Woman. Whilst there has been much research and discussions around the subject of gender in late ...
    • The Conscious Collective. An exploration of Orwell’s Representations of Individualism within Authoritarian Societies

Valderhaug, Petter (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-15)
This master’s thesis examines the prolific author George Orwell’s representation of the struggles associated with individualism within authoritarian regimes. By drawing on Hannah Arendt’s Responsibility and Judgement, a discussion of the Eichmann trials, and the responsibilities of the German people, this thesis establishes a theoretical framework. This framework is used to discuss the responsibilities ...

The following thesis aims to look at how reading Nuruddin Farah´s North of Dawn and Randa Abdel-Fattah´s The Lines We Cross can create resilience to radicalisation and violent extremism. Building on the concepts of deep reading, vicarious experiences and theories on preventative work, this thesis will show how literature that examines radicalisation in a critical light can show the importance of ...

This thesis aims to show how literature can be used to facilitate a deeper understanding of ourselves and our imaginative mind, inside and outside the classroom. The novel that will be used as an example is Arthur C. Clarke’s renowned 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). The novel revolves around Clarke’s worldview and prospections about the future, musing on the existential questions which have puzzled ...

    • Havmannen – om omgivelsenes betydning i betrakterens møte med skulptur i natur

Lande, Anja Kathrine (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2022-05-12)
