(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-02-28)Herein, we report a straightforward sequential acylation‐Finkelstein approach to achieve iodination of amine containing bioactives. The utility was demonstrated by successful radiolabelling with 123I in high radiochemical yield. Moreover, microwave‐assisted Finkelstein reaction can be employed to enhance conversion and reaction rates to obtain the desired iodides. The method is of interest ... -
Modelling high intensity laser pulse propagation in air using the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2018-06-01)Ultrafast laser pulse experiments and applications are entering a phase that challenges the validity of mathematical models utilised to model longer pulses in nonlinear optics. This thesis aims to propose a possible mathematical model for high intensity laser pulse propagation in air through a multiple scales expansion of Maxwell’s equations and discuss a method on how to solve the corresponding ... -
Electron and nuclear spin polarization in Rb-Xe spin-exchange optical hyperpolarization
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-03)Spin-exchange optical hyperpolarization of 129Xe gas enhances the signal-to-noise ratio in nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The governing parameter of the Rb-Xe spin-exchange process, the so-called enhancement factor, was recently reevaluated experimentally. However, the underlying hyperfine coupling and atomic interaction potential as functions of the internuclear distance of the ... -
The history and future trends of ocean warming-induced gas hydrate dissociation in the SW Barents Sea
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-01-13)The Barents Sea is a major part of the Arctic where the Gulf Stream mixes with the cold Arctic waters. Late Cenozoic uplift and glacial erosion have resulted in hydrocarbon leakage from reservoirs, evolution of fluid flow systems, shallow gas accumulations, and hydrate formation throughout the Barents Sea. Here we integrate seismic data observations of gas hydrate accumulations along with gas hydrate ... -
Ocean temperature variability for the past 60 years on the Norwegian-Svalbard margin influences gas hydrate stability on human time scales
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2012-10-23)The potential impact of future climate change on methane release from oceanic gas hydrates is the subject of much debate. We analyzed World Ocean Database quality controlled data on the Norwegian‐Svalbard continental margin from the past 60 years to evaluate the potential effect of ocean temperature variations on continental margin gas hydrate reservoirs. Bottom water temperatures in the Norwegian‐Svalbard ... -
Keystone Arctic paleoceanographic proxy association with putative methanotrophic bacteria
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-07-13)Foraminifera in sediments exposed to gas-hydrate dissociation are not expected to have cellular adaptations that facilitate inhabitation of chemosynthesis-based ecosystems because, to date, there are no known endemic seep foraminifera. To establish if foraminifera inhabit sediments impacted by gas-hydrate dissociation, we examined the cellular ultrastructure of <i>Melonis barleeanus</i> (Williamson, ... -
Quantitative interpretation using inverse rock-physics modeling on AVO data
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-08-16)Quantitative seismic interpretation has become an important and critical technology for improved hydrocarbon exploration and production. However, this is typically a resource-demanding process that requires information from several well logs, building a representative velocity model, and, of course, high-quality seismic data. Therefore, it is very challenging to perform in an exploration or appraisal ... -
Can we extend local sea-ice measurements to satellite scale? An example from the N-ICE2015 expedition
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-12-17)Knowledge of Arctic sea-ice conditions is of great interest for Arctic residents, as well as for commercial usage, and to study the effects of climate change. Information gained from analysis of satellite data contributes to this understanding. In the course of using in situ data in combination with remotely sensed data, the question of how representative local scale measurements are of a wider ... -
An objective global climatology of polar lows based on reanalysis data
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-04-16)Here we present an objective global climatology of polar lows. In order to obtain objective detection criteria, the efficacy of several parameters for separating polar lows from other cyclones has been compared. The comparison and the climatology are based on the ERA‐Interim reanalysis from 1979 ‐ 2016 and the high‐resolution Arctic System Reanalysis from 2000 ‐ 2012. The most effective parameters ... -
Holocene atmospheric circulation in the central North Pacific: A new terrestrial diatom and d18O dataset from the Aleutian Islands
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-07-02)The North Pacific is a zone of cyclogenesis that modulates synoptic-scale atmospheric circulation, yet there is a paucity of instrumental and paleoclimate data to fully constrain its long-term state and variability. We present the first Holocene oxygen isotope record (δ18Odiatom) from the Aleutian Islands, using siliceous diatoms preserved in Heart Lake on Adak Island (51.85° ... -
Carbon-carbon bonds with CO2: Insights from computational studies
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-02-17)In this mini-review, we provide an overview of recent computational studies on homogeneous transition metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond formation with CO2. We cover substitution and addition reactions involving different metals (mainly Ni, Rh, Cu) and substrates (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, arenes) with focus on the mechanistic details. The CO2 insertion step is generally found to be rate-limiting. ... -
Prevention of Marine Biofouling Using the Natural Allelopathic Compound Batatasin-III and Synthetic Analogues
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-06-21)The current study reports the first comprehensive evaluation of a class of allelopathic terrestrial natural products as antifoulants in a marine setting. To investigate the antifouling potential of the natural dihydrostilbene scaffold, a library of 22 synthetic dihydrostilbenes with varying substitution patterns, many of which occur naturally in terrestrial plants, were prepared and assessed for ... -
Statistical properties of intermittent fluctuations in the boundary of fusion plasmas
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2018-06-14)Fluctuation-induced plasma–wall interactions is a major concern for the next generation, high duty-cycle magnetic confinement fusion devices. The turbulence is generated in the outboard midplane transition region between the confined core plasma and the scrape-off layer where magnetic field lines intersect material walls. Here, filaments of hot and dense plasma, elongated in the field direction, ... -
Multi-frequency radar remote sensing of sea ice. Modelling and interpretation of polarimetric multi-frequency radar signatures of sea ice
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2018-06-08)This thesis deals with polarimetric multi-frequency radar signatures of sea ice. It presents a thorough background on the topic and three case studies. The first study presents a global sensitivity analysis of the fully polarimetric radar backscatter response from snow covered sea ice. The analysis is global in the sense that it takes into account the observed ranges of sea ice properties that ... -
Bayesian Computing with INLA: A Review
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2016-12-23)The key operation in Bayesian inference is to compute high-dimensional integrals. An old approximate technique is the Laplace method or approximation, which dates back to Pierre-Simon Laplace (1774). This simple idea approximates the integrand with a second-order Taylor expansion around the mode and computes the integral analytically. By developing a nested version of this classical idea, combined ... -
Rapid Surface Lowering of Benito Glacier, Northern Patagonian Icefield
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-05-01)The Patagonian Icefields, which straddle the Andes below 46°S, are two of the most sensitive ice masses on Earth to climate change. However, recent mass loss from the icefields along with its spatial and temporal variability is not well-constrained. Here we determine surface elevation changes of Benito Glacier, a 163 km2 outlet glacier draining the western flank of the North Patagonian Icefield, ... -
New geophysical evidence for a revised maximum position of part of the NE sector of the Greenland ice sheet during the last glacial maximum
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-06-26)The extent and dynamics of the north-eastern sector of the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) during the last glacial still remain very uncertain, and maximum ice extents to inner-shelf, mid-shelf and outer-shelf positions have been suggested. Here we argue that the margin of the GIS reached the shelf break along part of its NE sector during the last glacial maximum. Swath-bathymetry and sub-bottom profiler ... -
