Blending functions based on trigonometric and polynomial approximations of the Fabius function
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)Most simple blending functions are polynomials, while more advanced blending functions are, for example, rational or expo-rational fractions. The Fabius function has the required properties of a blending function, but is a nowhere analytic function and cannot be calculated exactly everywhere on the required domain. We present a new set of trigonometric and polynomial blending functions with the shape ... -
Finite element method application of ERBS triangles
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-11)In this paper we solve an eigenvalue problem on a circular membrane with fixed outer boundary by using a finite element method, where an element is represented as an expo-rational blending triangle. ERBS triangles combine properties of B-spline finite elements and standard polynomial triangular elements. The overlapping of local triangles allows us to provide a flexible handling of the surface while ... -
Multidimensional Hardy-type inequalities on time scales with variable exponents
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2019)A new Jensen inequality for multivariate superquadratic functions is derived and proved. The derived Jensen inequality is then employed to obtain the general Hardy-type integral inequality for superquadratic and subquadratic functions of several variables. -
The FlexNett Simulator
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2019)This paper documents research conducted in the Norwegian FLEXNETT project.<br>It describes a new tool that was developed to study the future impact of prosumers with PV panels on the grid in Norway and the potential energy flexibility that lies with residential prosumers. Systematic use of energy flexibility can be an important instrument for managing peak loads and voltage problems in weak power ... -
Local energy markets as a solution for increased energy efficiency and flexibility
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2019)With increasing share of distributed renewable energy resources in the grid and arising energy consumer awareness on environmental challenges new market models are sought where energy can be traded in an efficient and end-user centric way. This trend, together with the increasing consciousness on the benefits of local consumption and production has given rise to an increased focus on local energy ... -
Some Fourier inequalities for orthogonal systems in Lorentz–Zygmund spaces
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2019-06-13)A number of classical inequalities and convergence results related to Fourier coefficients with respect to unbounded orthogonal systems are generalized and complemented. All results are given in the case of Lorentz–Zygmund spaces. -
Atomized feedback, an approach to automatic formative assessment
(Peer reviewed; Chapter, 2017-11)In this article, we describe an approach to give automatic formative evaluation by atomizing the feedback. The mechanics in this approach is a large number of multiple-choice tests. The multiplechoice tests are used as voluntary assignments and gives controlled progression by releasing the tests in an order. Instruction is in the spirit of flipped classroom with short video lectures accompanied by ... -
Rescue of stranded persons. C18. Rescue of stranded passengers in the Arctic
(Forskningsrapport; Research report, 2018-12)Since we (the authors) could not be a part of the whole SARex 3 exercise this year, we joined the expedition later than the rest of the participants. We gladly accepted the invitation from the Governor of Svalbard, Kjerstin Askholt, and her staff in Longyearbyen to join their service vessel, MS Polarsyssel, to meet The Norwegian Coast Guard’s vessel, (NOCGV) Svalbard, at the location where the ... -
On geometric construction of some power means
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2018-11-27)In the homogenization theory, there are many examples where the effective conductivities of composite structures are power means of the local conductivities. The main aim of this paper is to initiate research concerning geometric construction of some power means of three or more variables. We contribute by giving methods for the geometric construction of the harmonic mean $ P_{-1} $ and the arithmetic ... -
A sharp boundedness result for restricted maximal operators of Vilenkin-Fourier series on martingale Hardy spaces
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2018-09-20)The restricted maximal operators of partial sums with respect to bounded Vilenkin systems are investigated. We derive the maximal subspace of positive numbers, for which this operator is bounded from the Hardy space H p to the Lebesgue space L p for all 0<p≤1 . We also prove that the result is sharp in a particular sense. -
Resolvent bounds for jump generators
(Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2016-12-02)The paper deals with jump generators with a convolution kernel. Assuming that the kernel decays either exponentially or polynomially, we prove a number of lower and upper bounds for the resolvent of such operators. In particular we focus on sharp estimates of the resolvent kernel for small values of the spectral parameter. We consider two applications of these results. First we obtain pointwise ... -
Homogenization of nonisothermal immiscible incompressible two-phase flow in porous media
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2018-03-15)In this paper, we consider nonisothermal two-phase flows through heterogeneous porous media with periodic microstructure. Examples of such models appear in gas migration through engineered and geological barriers for a deep repository for radioactive waste, thermally enhanced oil recovery and geothermal systems. The mathematical model is given by a coupled system of two-phase flow equations, and an ... -
Asymptotic Behaviour of Ground States for Mixtures of Ferromagnetic and Antiferromagnetic Interactions in a Dilute Regime
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2018-04-30)We consider randomly distributed mixtures of bonds of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic type in a two-dimensional square lattice with probability 1−p 1−p and p, respectively, according to an i.i.d. random variable. We study minimizers of the corresponding nearest-neighbour spin energy on large domains in Z 2 Z2 . We prove that there exists p 0 p0 such that for p≤ p 0 p≤p0 such ... -
Steady States, Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorems and Homogenization for Reversible Diffusions in a Random Environment
(Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2018-04-02)Prolongating our previous paper on the Einstein relation, we study the motion of a particle diffusing in a random reversible environment when subject to a small external forcing. In order to describe the long time behavior of the particle, we introduce the notions of steady state and weak steady state. We establish the continuity of weak steady states for an ergodic and uniformly elliptic environment. ... -
Pointwise estimates for heat kernels of convolution-type operators
(Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2018-04-16)We study the large‐time behaviour of the fundamental solution of parabolic equations with an elliptic part being non‐local convolution‐type operator. We assume that this operator is a generator of a Markov jump process, and that its convolution kernel decays at least exponentially at infinity. The fundamental solution shows rather different asymptotic behaviour depending on whether | x | ≲ t , or t ... -
Dynamic plastic response of beams subjected to localised pulse loads
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2018-10-31)Localised blast loads give rise to high gradients of overpressure detrimental to structural elements as beams and plates. This article presents an analytical study on the dynamic plastic response of beams made of a ductile metallic material due to close-in pulse pressure loading. The close-in pressure load is characterised by a spatially varying function constant over a central region and exponentially ... -

Geometric Construction of Some Lehmer Means
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-11-14)The main aim of this paper is to contribute to the recently initiated research concerning geometric constructions of means, where the variables are appearing as line segments. The present study shows that all Lehmer means of two variables for integer power k and for k = m 2 , where m is an integer, can be geometrically constructed, that Lehmer means for power k = 0,1 and 2 can be geometrically ... -
A NEW GENERALIZATION OF BOAS THEOREM FOR SOME LORENTZ SPACES Λq(ω)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018)Let Λq( ω ), q > 0, denote the Lorentz space equipped with the (quasi) norm [<i>MATHEMATICAL FORMULA</I>] for a function f on [0,1] and with ω positive and equipped with some additional growth properties. A generalization of Boas theorem in the form of a two-sided inequality is obtained in the case of both general regular system [<i>MATHEMATICAL FORMULA</I>] and generalized Lorentz Λq( ω ) spaces -
Two-sided estimates of the Lebesgue constants with respect to Vilenkin systems and applications
(Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2017-03-13)In this paper, we derive two-sided estimates of the Lebesgue constants for bounded Vilenkin systems, we also present some applications of importance, e.g., we obtain a characterization for the boundedness of a subsequence of partial sums with respect to Vilenkin–Fourier series of H 1 martingales in terms of n's variation. The conditions given in this paper are in a sense necessary and sufficient.
