On the Role of the Atmospheric Energy Transport in 2xCO2-Induced Polar Amplification in CESM1
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-06-12)A doubling of the atmospheric CO2 content leads to global warming that is amplified in the polar regions. The CO2 forcing also leads to a change of the atmospheric energy transport. This transport change affects the local warming induced by the CO2 forcing. Using the Community Earth System Model (CESM), the direct response to the transport change is investigated. ... -
Sinking Organic Particles in the Ocean—Flux Estimates From in situ Optical Devices
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-02-18)Optical particle measurements are emerging as an important technique for understanding the ocean carbon cycle, including contributions to estimates of their downward flux, which sequesters carbon dioxide (CO2) in the deep sea. Optical instruments can be used from ships or installed on autonomous platforms, delivering much greater spatial and temporal coverage of particles in the mesopelagic ... -
Optimizing rearing and welfare in Senegalese sole (Solea senegalesensis) broodstock: Effect of ambient light intensity and handling time on stress response
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2019-09-25)Broodstock rearing conditions and handling procedures should be optimized in aquaculture species in order to benefit fish welfare and guarantee optimal conditions for spawning. In teleosts, basal cortisol levels display daily rhythms, oscillating along the 24 h of the day. In this sense, handling fish at different moments of the day may lead to different stress responses. The present study aimed at ... -
Mass Protests from a Spatial Perspective: Discontent and Urban Public Space in Kyiv, Minsk, and Moscow
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2020-03-17)Mass protests have been an important part of the political environment in Eastern Europe for more than a century. Since the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917, people have turned to urban spaces to make their opinions heard and to demand change, with varying degrees of success. This was most notably the case during the 1960s; and from the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, ... -

We assessed whether changes in conduct problems and maternal depressive symptoms co-occur following participation in the Incredible Years parenting program. We integrated individual participant data from 10 randomized trials (<i>N</i> ... -
Triggers and risk factors of first and recurrent venous thromboembolism
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2020-01-29)Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing both deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is a major public health concern due to substantial morbidity and mortality. Around half of all VTE cases are hospital-related. Importantly, VTE also has life-long implications, as a large proportion of VTE-patients suffer either a recurrent event or chronic complications. The first aim of the thesis was to ... -
Facilitation mediates species presence beyond their environmental optimum
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-04-01)Species distributions are driven by abiotic conditions that filter species with specific traits and physiological tolerances and match them with their suitable environment. Plant–plant interactions can constrict (through competition) or loosen (through facilitation) the strength of these environmental filters, which in turn inhibit or enhance establishment and recruitment of plant species at a finer ... -
Behavior and thermal environment of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in the North Pacific Ocean, elucidated from pop-up satellite archival tags
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-06-22)Chinook salmon are widely distributed in offshore waters of the North Pacific Ocean, and of great economical and subsistence importance; however, little is known about their oceanic ecology. To address this, we tagged 43 Chinook salmon <i>Oncorhynchus tshawytscha</i> (57–100 cm) with pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) in the eastern (October– December) and central Bering Sea (August) to provide ... -

Energetic electron precipitation occurrence rates determined using the Syowa East SuperDARN Radar
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-07-04)We demonstrate that the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radar at Syowa station, Antarctica, can be used to detect high frequency radio wave attenuation in the <i>D</i> region ionosphere during energetic electron precipitation (EEP) events. EEP‐related attenuation is identified in the radar data as a sudden reduction in the backscatter power and background noise parameters. We focus ... -
Patch Size Evolution During Pulsating Aurora
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-05-30)We report both decreasing and increasing trends in the patch sizes during pulsating aurora events. About 150 pulsating auroral events over the Fennoscandian Lapland have been successfully analyzed for their average patch size, total patch area, and number of patches as a function of event time, typically 1–2 hr. An automatic routine has been developed to detect patches in the all‐sky camera images. ... -
