Effect of three different codend designs on the size selectivity of juvenile cod in the Barents Sea shrimp trawl fishery
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-07-31)Shrimp trawlers often use a Nordmøre sorting grid ahead of a small mesh codend to avoid bycatch of juvenile fish while allowing shrimps to be efficiently caught. However, small fish can pass through the grid to enter the codend and risk being retained. The risk of retention for fish of different sizes depends the size selection in the Nordmøre grid and the size selection in the subsequent codend, ... -

Effects of inconsistent reporting, regulation changes and market demand on abundance indices of sharks caught by pelagic longliners off southern Africa
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-10-24)The assumption of a proportional relationship between catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) and the abundance of sharks caught by pelagic longliners is tenuous when based on fisher logbooks that report only retained specimens. Nevertheless, commercial logbooks and landings statistics are often the only data available for stock status assessments. Logbook data collected from local and foreign pelagic longline ... -
Effects of life-history traits and network topological characteristics on the robustness of marine food webs
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-02-08)Management targets for biodiversity preservation are shifting from individual species to an ecosystem-wide focus. Indeed, the perturbation analysis of interaction networks, such as food webs, better captures the response of biodiversity to environmental pressures than single-species considerations. Here we propose a framework that examines food web robustness to a given perturbation based on ... -
