    • Transgene and immune gene expression following intramuscular injection of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) with DNA-releasing PLGA nano- and microparticles

Hølvold, Linn Benjaminsen; Fredriksen, Børge Nilsen; Bøgwald, Jarl; Dalmo, Roy Ambli (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
The use of poly-(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) particles as carriers for DNA delivery has received considerable attention in mammalian studies. DNA vaccination of fish has been shown to elicit durable transgene expression, but no reports exist on intramuscular administration of PLGA-encapsulated plasmid DNA (pDNA). We injected Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) intramuscularly with a plasmid ...
    • Stakeholder Influence and Optimal Regulations: A Common-Agency Analysis of Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Regulations

Aanesen, Margrethe; Armstrong, Claire W. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
One aspect of ecosystem-based management is to include new stakeholders. When an environmental NGO (ENGO) gets a say in the fisheries management, this will affect the authorities' optimal regulation. Combining a principal-agent model and a steady-state bioeconomic model, we show that under symmetric information the authorities will moderate their use of regulation as a response to the ENGO's increased ...
    • Pushed or pulled? Understanding fishery exit in a welfare society context

Johnsen, Jahn Petter; Vik, Jostein (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
For a long time the number of fishers in Norway has declined. Is the decline the result of an increasingly difficult situation for Norwegian fishers or can other factors have had an impact? Or in other words: are fishers pushed out or pulled out of the fisheries? Our analyses are based on a survey among retired fishers and suggest several reasons for exit: in addition to structural push and pull ...

    • CpG- and LPS-activated MAPK signaling in in vitro cultured salmon (Salmo salar) mononuclear phagocytes

Iliev, Dimitri Borisov; Hansen, Tom Egil; Jørgensen, Sven Martin; Krasnov, Aleksei; Jørgensen, Jorunn B (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
The Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) are involved in transmitting intracellular signals downstream of diverse cell surface receptors and mediate the response to ligands such as growth factors, hormones and cytokines. In addition, MAPK are critically involved in the innate immune response to pathogen-derived substances, commonly referred to as pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), ...
    • Homing of Antigen-Presenting Cells in Head Kidney and Spleen – Salmon Head Kidney Hosts Diverse APC Types

Iliev, Dimitri Borisov; Thim, Hanna Leena; Lagos, Leidy; Olsen, randi; Jørgensen, Jorunn B (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
Lymph nodes and spleen are major organs where mammalian antigen-presenting cells (APCs) initiate and orchestrate Ag-specific immune responses. Unlike mammals, teleosts lack lymph nodes and an interesting question is whether alternative organs may serve as sites for antigen presentation in teleosts. In the current study, fluorescent ovalbumin (Ova) and CpG oligonucleotides (ODNs) injected intra-abdominally ...
    • CpG oligonucleotides bind TLR9 and RRM-Containing proteins in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar)

Iliev, Dimitar Borisov; SkjÆveland, ingrid; Jørgensen, Jorunn B (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
Background: Bacterial DNA is well-known for its potent immunostimulatory properties which have been attributed to the abundance of CpG dinucleotides within the genomes of prokaryotes. Research has found that mammalian TLR9 is a receptor which mediates the immune response to CpG DNA; however, its functional properties in non-mammalian vertebrates are still poorly characterized. Leukocytes isolated ...
    • Adjuvants and immunostimulants in fish vaccines: Current knowledge and future perspectives.

Tafalla, C; Bøgwald, Jarl; Dalmo, Roy Ambli (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
Vaccination is the most adequate method to control infectious diseases that threaten the aquaculture industry worldwide. Unfortunately, vaccines are usually not able to confer protection on their own; especially those vaccines based on recombinant antigens or inactivated pathogens. Therefore, the use of adjuvants or immunostimulants is often necessary to increase the vaccine efficacy. Traditional ...

    • Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Barettin

Lind, Karianne Fredenfeldt; Hansen, Espen; Østerud, Bjarne; Eilertsen, Karl-Erik; Bayer, Annette; Engqvist, Stig Olov Magnus; Leszczak, Kinga; Jørgensen, Trond Ø.; Andersen, Jeanette hammer (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
In this paper, we present novel bioactivity for barettin isolated from the marine sponge Geodia barretti. We found that barettin showed strong antioxidant activity in biochemical assays as well as in a lipid peroxidation cell assay. A de-brominated synthetic analogue of barettin did not show the same activity in the antioxidant cell assay, indicating that bromine is important for cellular activity. ...
    • Aldri mer 18. april!

Finstad, Bjørn-Petter; Holm, Petter (Chronicle; Kronikk, 2013-04-18)

    • Change in Fish Community Structure in the Barents Sea

Aschan, Michaela; Fossheim, Maria; Greenacre, Michael; Primicerio, Raul (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
Change in oceanographic conditions causes structural alterations in marine fish communities, but this effect may go undetected as most monitoring programs until recently mainly have focused on oceanography and commercial species rather than on whole ecosystems. In this paper, the objective is to describe the spatial and temporal changes in the Barents Sea fish community in the period 1992–2004 while ...
    • Marine spatial planning: risk or opportunity for fisheries in the North Sea?

Jentoft, Svein; Knol, Maaike (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014)
The North Sea is one of the busiest marine areas in the world. It is also a major fisheries ground. Bordered by seven countries with their own spatial uses and claims, the stage is set for complex and demanding governance challenges. Recent decades have also seen user groups multiply, competition for space and resources increase, and the pressure on the marine environment and its living natural ...

Eomesodermin (Eomes), a T-bet homologue expressed in activated CD8+T cells was recently proposed to act as a master regulator of cytotoxic CD8+ T cell effector function and offers an exciting avenue for future exploration. Here, we have identified and characterized the full-length Atlantic salmon Eomes cDNA (2477 bp). Promoter analysis of the salmon Eomes showed the presence of important putative ...
    • Making ecosystem-based management operational: Integrated monitoring in Norway

Knol, Maaike (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
Ecosystem-based management presupposes that the state and development trends of an ecosystem - or of ecological quality - can be measured and followed. Currently, in many coastal countries there exists a variety of monitoring practices that are concerned with single issues only, and are not an integrated part of a larger framework. With the trend towards more comprehensive forms of ecosystem-based ...
