Bakgrunnen for å gå i gang med denne studien er min arbeidserfaring fra et psykoseteam i en voksenpsykiatrisk poliklinikk. Gjennom arbeidet i dette teamet erfarte jeg at det kunne være en utfordring å få etablert kontakt med personer som kunne være i ferd med å utvikle psykose. Som regel gjaldt det unge mennesker, og i de fleste situasjonene var det pårørende som var bekymret for dem. Personen selv responderte ofte ikke på henvendelser og tilbud om kontakt. I slike tilfeller måtte en arbeide indirekte, det vil si i forhold til kontakt med pårørende og primærhelsetjenesten i lang tid før en kom i direkte kontakt med personen bekymringen dreide seg om.
Målet med mitt prosjekt var å finne mer ut av hvordan personene opplevde og erfarte tida da psykosen var under utvikling eller var blitt mer eller mindre manifest. Innsikt i dette håper jeg kan være til hjelp når en som hjelper skal forsøke å etablere kontakt med de personene det gjelder. Forskning viser at slike personer ofte ikke søker hjelp, eller de kommer for sent til behandling. Ved å intervjue personer som selv hadde opplevd psykose eller psykosenær tilstand, ville jeg prøve jeg å få fatt på hvordan de hadde opplevd sin situasjon, og om det var noe de kunne fortelle fra de situasjonene hvor andre prøvde å få dem til å søke hjelp. Jeg ville prøve å få fatt på deres erfaringer, følelser, tanker og opplevelser omkring tiden før de kom i kontakt med hjelpeapparatet, og i tiden da etableringen av kontakt fant sted. Hvis de i utgangspunktet ikke hadde ønsket hjelp, ønsket jeg å finne ut hva som hadde betydd noe for at de endret innstilling og tok i mot hjelp.
Da jeg begynte å orientere meg mot forskningen på det området som min oppgave omhandler, oppdaget jeg ganske raskt at det eksisterer en god del forskning som viste at personer med psykosenære eller psykosetilstander ofte ikke søkte hjelp på eget initiativ. Mange av disse hadde hatt manifeste psykosesymptomer i flere år da de kom i kontakt med hjelpeapparatet. Imidlertid fant jeg sparsomt med forskning som fokuserte på opplevelsene og erfaringene til nevnte personer i den tida hvor psykosesymptomene utviklet seg og eventuelt endte med psykoseutbrudd. Det er derfor dette som fokuseres i min studie.
Tilnærmingen i studien er fenomenologisk – hermeneutisk og metoden for innsamling av empirisk materiale er det kvalitative forskningsintervju. Fire intervjuer er grunnlaget for studien.
Funnene peker mot to hovedtemaer knyttet til ”Det ordløse og det ensomme” og ”Opplevelse av egen identitet”. ”Det ordløse” og ”det ensomme” henger sammen. Å mangle ord for opplevelser og erfaringer vanskeliggjorde samhandling med andre gjennom språket og å oppleve en felles verden ed andre. Ensomheten handlet om noe en var alene om, mer enn å mangle noen å være sammen med. ”Opplevelse av egen identitet” var knyttet til hvordan erfaringene med sykdom endret deres måte å oppfatte seg og sine omgivelser på.
