dc.description.abstract | This dissertation represents the first monograph on the understudied missionary text Conversión de Píritu (1690) written by the franciscan Matías Ruiz Blanco (1643–1708). The main aim is to present Ruiz Blanco as a cultural translator in his endeavor to convert to Christianity the Cumanagoto people of the Province of Píritu during the last decades of the 17th century. He made visible his efforts to adapt the Catholic faith to the indigenous languages and mentality referred by him as the key obstacles in the assimilation of Cumanagoto people to Christian lifestyle in a borderland area. His work represents the first comprehensive written account on the Cumanagoto world which comprises four books 1) a historical introduction, (2) the practice of teaching the natives the Christian doctrine and a translation of the Catholic Church’s essential sermons and sacraments into the Cumanagoto language, (3) a grammar of the Cumanagoto language, and (4) a Spanish-Cumanagoto vocabulary. My approach to this hybrid text is to present the mechanisms of cultural representation and the practices of evangelization deployed by Ruiz Blanco in the transmission of Christian concepts which often implied a resemantization of key indigenous terms. Subsequently, we find how Ruiz Blanco integrated the Cumanagoto traditions into the Christian belief system, establishing parallels that resulted in the reconceptualization of specific indigenous practices according to Western categorization of knowledge.

dc.description.abstract | El presente estudio es la primera monografía que analiza un texto misionero poco conocido Conversión de Píritu (1690) escrito por el franciscano Matías Ruiz Blanco (1643–1708). El principal objetivo es examinar los dispositivos de saber empleados por este misionero en su trabajo de evangelización de los indígenas cumanagotos de la Provincia de Píritu en el siglo XVII como instancias de traducción cultural. En sus obras se hacen visibles las estrategias empleadas por Ruiz Blanco para amoldar la fe católica a la lengua y la mentalidad indígenas referidas por él mismo como principales obstáculos en la asimilación de los cumanagotos a la vida cristiana en un área fronteriza. Conversión de Píritu (1690) representa una de las primeras obras misioneras que compendia una extensa información sobre el universo cumanagoto y está compuesta de cuatro libros (1) una introducción histórica, (2) la práctica para enseñar a los nativos la doctrina cristiana y una traducción de los sermones y sacramentos esenciales de la Iglesia Católica al idioma de cumanagoto, (3) una gramática del idioma cumanagoto y (4) un vocabulario español-cumanagoto. Este trabajo se concentra en los mecanismos de representación cultural y las prácticas de evangelización relacionadas con la transmisión de conceptos cristianos que a menudo plantean una resemantización de términos indígenas clave. Además, ofrece una perspectiva sobre cómo Ruiz Blanco integró las tradiciones cumanago- tas en el sistema de creencias cristiano, estableciendo así paralelismos entre las tradiciones indígenas y sus moldes de pensamiento occidental.

dc.description.popularabstract | Not long after Columbus stepped for the first time into the shores of the Carribean sea in 1492, did the Pope immediately send his men to spread the Christian faith among the indigenous people. Thus, during the 16-17th centuries, an intense missionary work took place all over Latin America. Everyone had to be converted to Christianity, although the conversion process differed from one region to the other. Each one of the religious orders was designated to control the different areas of the present-day Latin America. The most powerful missions (Dominican, Franciscan and Jesuit) sought to impose their own particular idea of Christianity to the indigenous people through different methods of propaganda.
For the sake of the spread of the Christian faith, in first place the missionaries had to learn the indigenous languages and to understand their cultures in order to translate the main Catholic prayers. But Church methods of spreading the Christian faith in colonial Latin-America were not fully effective. In their religious actions, the missionaries did not always succeed to create better understanding between people. There was a significant cultural gap between the Europeans and the indigenous peoples that needed to be bridged in order to succeed the political and spiritual conquest.
This PhD dissertation focuses on the Encounters and Cultural Transfers in Colonial Hispanic Literature and the significant role played by the missionaries as mediators in the relentless clashes between the indigenous and the Western worlds, and represents the first monograph on the understudied missionary text Conversión de Píritu (1690) written by the Franciscan Matías Ruiz Blanco (1643–1708). Contextualizing Matías Ruiz Blanco´s work in the 17th century Spain and America, this study explores how he described the encounter with new cultural aspects of the indigenous peoples and their religious beliefs in the context of the massive evangelization process undertaken in the Americas during the colonial period. | en_US |
