In spite of the studies that have dealt with numeral quantifiers in Spanish, there is still one empirical issue that is understudied: constructions where a cardinal numeral combines with an expression denoting a fraction (un libro y medio ‘one and a half books’, un kilo y cuarto ‘one and a quarter kilos’). The goal of this work is to shed some light on the syntactic and semantic properties of these combinations, paying particular attention to the constructions with y medio ‘and a half’, which have unique properties within the class. In this work we propose, through an analysis of word order, the combination with adjectives and the selection of nouns, that the structures containing y medio are not cases of coordinations, but they contain a complex lexical numeral layer over which a functional layer is projected; the order of adjectives and parametric variation displayed by these structures depends on two factors: the movement operations that are triggered in each case and the height at which each adjectival modifier is introduced.
