Recycling in Babel: The Impact of Foreign Languages in Rule Learning
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-05-27)Environmental decisions and prosocial behaviors have been shown to be emotionally mediated, and language is at the core of emotions. The language context can alter the way decisions are made, and using a foreign language tends to favor an analytic approach to the decision and reduce its emotional resonance. In the present work, we explored whether or not the strategic use of a native vs. a non-native ... -
Working Paper: Progressive Cities: Urban-rural polarisation of social values and economic development around the world
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-01)In contrast to the conservative values of rural populations, cities are often seen as bulwarks of liberal, progressive values. This urban-rural divide in values has become one of the major fault lines in western democracies, underpinning major political events of the last decade, not least the election of Donald Trump. Yet, beyond a small number of countries, there is little evidence that cities ... -
Individual differences in bilingual word recognition: The role of experiential factors and word frequency in cross-language lexical priming
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-12-22)In studies of bilingual word recognition with masked priming, first language (L1) primes activate their second language (L2) translation equivalents in lexical decision tasks, but effects in the opposite direction are weaker (Wen & van Heuven, 2017). This study seeks to clarify the relative weight of stimulus-level (frequency) and individual-level (L2 proficiency, L2 exposure/use) factors in the ... -

By employing GIS to amalgamate data from historic mapping, ground penetrating radar, LiDAR, and 30 years of archaeological investigation, the authors reconstruct the historic landscape at the ... -
Improving dialogue among researchers, local and indigenous peoples and decision-makers to address issues of climate change in the North
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-11-12)The Circumpolar North has been changing rapidly within the last decades, and the socioeconomic systems of the Eurasian Arctic and Siberia in particular have displayed the most dramatic changes. Here, anthropogenic drivers of environmental change such as migration and industrialization are added to climateinduced changes in the natural environment such as permafrost thawing and increased frequency ... -
It Takes a Village: Using Network Science to Identify the Effect of Individual Differences in Bilingual Experience for Theory of Mind
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2022-04-09)An increasing amount of research has examined the effects of bilingualism on performance in theory of mind (ToM) tasks. Bilinguals outperform monolinguals in ToM when comparing groups. However, it is unclear what aspects of the bilingual experience contribute to this effect in a dynamic construct like ToM. To date, bilingualism has been conceptualized as a dichotic skill that is distinct from ... -
Future directions in examining neurological adaptation to bilingual experiences
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-09-16)In recent years, research examining the neurocognitive effects of bilingualism has undergone a shift in focus towards examining the neurocognitive effects of individual differences within specific aspects of language experience. The DeLuca et al study advances this direction in showing a specificity of neural adaptations to separate aspects of language experience. However, this approach is an early ... -

The emphasis is on how information about the population in the Western countries and Russia has traditionally been collected. The development of the methods for taking the earliest censuses; the transition from numeric to nominative censuses and ... -
Documentation, Information and the Animal Connection
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-12)The article elaborates on the informational relationship between nature, animals and humans. In traditional societies, nature and animals are rich sources of information and documentation, as seen in Sámi reindeer husbandry. Today, research on animal behaviour has shown that animals are capable of sophisticated communication with humans. In the field of documentation and information studies, Marcia ... -
A Note on Resilience Perspectives in Public Library Research: Paths Towards Research Agendas
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-12)Resilience is the ability to cope with change. The concept of resilience originating in the natural sciences has been applied in a variety of disciplines, from physics through ecology and social ecology to psychology and cultural studies. In public library research, very little resilience research has been conducted. The derived concepts of community resilience and information resilience have been ... -
The Struggle for Existence. Ibsen's The Wild Duck (Vildanden , 1884)
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-05-12)In The Wild Duck the struggle for existence is humorously referred to in the dialogue:

FRU SØRBY. Kammerherrerne mener, at bedes man til middag, så skal man også arbejde for føden, herr Ekdal.

DEN FEDE HERRE. I et godt madhus er det en ren fornøjelse.

DEN TYNDHÅREDE. Herre gud, når det gælder kampen for tilværelsen, så – (Ibsen 2009a, 27–28)1

Moreover, the symbolism ... -
Examining the contribution of markedness to the L2 processing of Spanish person agreement: An event-related potentials study
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-11-10)We used event-related potentials to investigate how markedness impacts person agreement in English-speaking learners of L2-Spanish. Markedness was examined by probing agreement with both first-person (marked) and third-person (unmarked) subjects. Agreement was manipulated by crossing first-person subjects with third-person verbs and vice-versa. Native speakers showed a P600 for both errors, larger ... -
Why are population growth rate estimates of past and present hunter–gatherers so different?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-11-30)Hunter–gatherer population growth rate estimates extracted from archaeological proxies and ethnographic data show remarkable differences, as archaeological estimates are orders of magnitude smaller than ethnographic and historical estimates. This could imply that prehistoric hunter–gatherers were demographically different from recent hunter–gatherers. However, we show that the resolution of ... -
The effect of bilingualism on brain development from early childhood to young adulthood.
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2020-07-20)Bilingualism afects the structure of the brain in adults, as evidenced by experience-dependent grey and white matter changes in brain structures implicated in language learning, processing, and control. However, limited evidence exists on how bilingualism may infuence brain development. We examined the developmental patterns of both grey and white matter structures in a cross-sectional study of ... -

Variable V2 in Norwegian Heritage Language: An effect of crosslinguistic influence?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-05-28)This paper discusses possible attrition of verb second (V2) word order in Norwegian heritage language by investigating a corpus of spontaneous speech produced by 50 2nd–4th generation heritage speakers in North America. The study confirms previous findings that V2 word order is generally stable in heritage situations, but nevertheless finds approximately 10% V2 violations. The cases of non-V2 word ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-12-31)The research question of the present paper is the following: to what degree (if any) is gender relevant as an explanatory factor in, firstly, the process of assimilation and later, the process of (re)vitalisation of indigenous and minority languages in northern Fenno-Scandia (the North Calotte)? The assimilation of the ethnic groups in question was a process initiated and lead by the authorities in ...
