This research explores the motivations behind code-switching behavior, particularly focusing on its occurrence within the context of group discussions among English undergraduate students. Twenty participants, consisting of seven females and thirteen males, were observed during group discussions and subsequently interviewed individually to elucidate the reasons underlying their code-switching practices. The study reveals a prevalent use of code-switching among participants, primarily employed to circumvent the usage of taboo words in the Pashto language. For instance, participants frequently substituted the Pashto word "shondyee" with the English equivalent "lips," reflecting a conscious effort to avoid potentially offensive language. Through interviews, participants acknowledged discomfort associated with using taboo words in Pashto, recognizing their potential to create negative impressions. Such taboo words were identified as triggers for code-switching, suggesting a desire for euphemistic expression and social propriety. Through interview participants expressed discomfort and embarrassment associated with using Pashto terms in public or formal settings, opting instead for English words to navigate cultural and social sensitivities. The findings highlight the complex interplay between language, culture, and social norms, shedding light on the nuanced ways in which linguistic taboos shape communication patterns within Pashtun communities. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of language dynamics and social interactions in multicultural contexts.en_US
