    • Forty years of allocated seats for Sami medical students : has preferential admission worked?

Gaski, Margrete; Abelsen, Birgit; Hasvold, Toralf (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2008)
This article examines the effects of a special admission policy for Sami medical students in Norway. In the 1960s, public health and health care were found to be poorer in Sami communities than in the rest of Norway. There were few doctors and none of them spoke Sami. Sami school leavers found it difficult to gain admittance to medical schools. In response to this situation, the medical faculty at ...

    • Vasopressin impairs brain, heart and kidney perfusion: an experimental study in pigs after transient myocardial ischemia

Müller, Stig; How, Ole-Jakob; Hermansen, Stig Eggen; Stenberg, Thor Allan; Sager, Georg; Myrmel, Truls (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2008-02-21)
Introduction: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is increasingly used to restore mean arterial pressure (MAP) in low-pressure shock states unresponsive to conventional inotropes. This is potentially deleterious since AVP is also known to reduce cardiac output by increasing vascular resistance. The effects of AVP on blood flow to vital organs and cardiac performance in a circulation altered by cardiac ...
    • Are fish oil omega-3 long-chain fatty acids and their derivatives peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor agonists?

Gani, Osman (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2008-03-20)
Background Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARα, PPARγ, and PPARδ) are physiological sensors for glucose and lipid homeostasis. They are also the targets of synthetic drugs; such as fibrates as PPARα agonists which lower lipid level, and glitazones as PPARγ agonists which lower glucose level. As diabetes and metabolic diseases are often associated with high blood glucose and lipid ...
    • Analysis of glomerular target structures for nephritic anti-dsDNA antibodies playing central roles in lupus nephritis

Tømmerås, Berit (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2008-05)
Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease characterized by the presence of autoantibodies towards nuclear antigens. Sub-populations of anti-dsDNA antibodies have the potential to bind in the kidney and thereby induce nephritis, but there is no definite distinction that separates non-pathogenic from pathogenic antibodies. There must be parameters that determine anti-dsDNA antibody binding, ...
    • Real-time polymerase chain reaction species specific for Neisseria Gonorrhoeae

Olsen, Merethe Elise (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2008-05)
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria called gonococci. The disease was described in ancient times, but until the late nineteenth century it was mixed up with syphilis. Eventually microscopy could differ between the organisms and give a reliable diagnosis. Human is the only known reservoir for gonorrhea. It is transferred during all acts of sexual activity, and an infection ...
    • Theoretical and experimental studies of thermolysin inhibition

Wuxiuer, Yimingjiang (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2008-05-15)
Zinc-metalloproteinases play a key role in the biosythesis and metabolism of different bioactive peptides. As a member of zinc-metalloproteinases, thermolysin has served as a model system to study the inhibition mechanism of other metalloproteinases. Inhibitors of thermolysin have considerable potential as therapeutic agents. In the present master thesis, docking calculations were performed and ...

The 16,644 bp and 16,745 bp mtDNAs, respectively, contain the same set of 37 structural genes found in all vertebrates analyzed so far. The gene organization is conserved compared to other Gadidae species, but with one notable exception. ...
    • Et eksperimentelt studium av kreftceller fra livmorhals - Strålesensitivitet, effektutvikling og cGMP nivåer

Livik, Marit (Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2008-06)
