This Master's thesis explores the empowerment and constraints of slum tourism in Ga Mashie, Ghana. The study examines how slum tourism impacts local communities, focusing on whether it brings social, economic, and cultural empowerment or perpetuates existing challenges. Using qualitative methods, including interviews with community members, tour guides, and local authorities, the research investigates the dual nature of slum tourism: as a source of revenue and cultural exchange versus potential exploitation and reinforcement of stereotypes. Findings suggest that while slum tourism can empower communities by generating income, promoting hospitality, and preserving cultural practices, it also faces constraints such as ethical concerns, limited infrastructure, and resistance from residents wary of being portrayed negatively. The thesis concludes by recommending strategies for a balanced approach to slum tourism in Ga Mashie, Ghana including community-led tours, ethical guidelines, and reinvesting tourism revenue into local development. In summary, the research provides insights into how slum tourism can be managed to empower communities such as the Ga Mashie while respecting their dignity and cultural values.en_US
