The idea of Arctic Review on Law and Politics emerged over a coffee table at the Faculty of Law at the Arctic University of Norway sometime in 2009. The vision of a scholarly journal dedicated to legal and political issues related to the Circumpolar North was inspired by the Stoltenberg government’s new Arctic policy, the faculty’s research priorities, i.e. Indigenous rights and law of the sea, related to the High North, and the expanding academic cooperation with Russian partner institutions. The growing international attention to Indigenous rights, especially following the 2007 adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, further reinforced the initiative.
