When Russian is more Perfective than Spanish
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)In this article we analyze cases in which Spanish imperfective aspect is equivalent to Russian perfective forms, a topic that has received very little attention in the literature. We argue that a crucial difference between perfectives in both languages is the relevance of the starting point of the event. Russian adopts an aspectual perspective from within an extended event, which gives access to the ... -

I begynnelsen.
Improving observational blends research: regression modeling in the study of experimentally-elicited blends
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-12-16)In this paper, we discuss the results of a blend production experiment and how it relates to previous research that was nearly exclusively based on observational data. Specifically, we study three different findings from published research, namely that (i) the shorter source word contributes more of itself to the blend than the longer source word, (ii) source word2 determines blend stress (more than ... -

(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2019-11-01)Moby-Dick, or The Whale is a novel famed for its multifaceted nature, due to the myriad of both literary themes and political views that critics can explicate from it. In this thesis I will show how the novel Moby Dick, or the Whale can be interpreted in a manner that engender nation and myth building for the United States, in which the contemporary greatness of the nation makes up for the lack of ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-12-19)Studies within oncology show that patients suffering from cancer report having a stronger feeling of hope than the general population. Such findings correspond to the pivotal role hope has in Henrik Wergeland’s (1808–1845) six so-called deathbed poems. Writing of illness the way Wergeland does is a part of the tradition of autobiographical literature called pathography. However, also having a dead ... -

(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-12-19)This article conducts a close reading of Vigdis Hjorth’s novel Arv og miljø (2016). I argue that the novel is informed by an imagery of contagion and disease which is used to express a theme of dysfunctional familial relationships. A related imagery of boundaries and cleanliness is used to relay the narrator’s experience of having been sexually assaulted by her father. In closing, I maintain ... -

Paratext – a useful concept for the analysis of digital documents?
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019)In his study, Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation , the French literature scholar Gérard Genette introduces the concept of the “paratext” to the public. Genette explains the term paratext as that “what enables a text to become a book and to be offered as such to its readers and, more generally, to the public” (Genette 1997, 1). Genette’s concept has since also been applied to other media, ... -

The loss of feminine gender in Norwegian: a dialect comparison
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2019-07-08)It is well known that grammatical gender systems may change historically. Previous research has documented loss of the feminine gender in several Norwegian dialects, including those spoken in Oslo and Tromsø (Lødrup in Maal og Minne 2:120–136, 2011; Rodina and Westergaard in J Ger Linguist 27(2):145–187 2015). In these dialects, the change is characterized by replacement of the feminine indefinite ...
