As part of the evaluation, the impact of the system noise and incidence angle on the SAR images is discussed. It is shown that the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the sensor has a ... -
Automatic Detection of Naturally Enhanced Ion-Acoustic Lines in EISCAT data
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-06-01)Naturally Enhanced Ion-Acoustic Lines (Neials) are small-scaled and short-lived phenomena in the ionosphere, which is widely researched internationally. At present, the search for Neials is a tedious task that has to be done through visual inspection. This is often a time-consuming process and limits the research on Neials. By automating the means of locating the Neials, the access to them will be ... -

(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-12-22)Digital games do not only serve entertainment purposes, but can also benefit as useful tools for learning. Games that have an explicit and carefully thought-out educational intention has appeared as very productive within health care, and have been used more frequently as part of treatment among children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Insulin-depended diabetes has no known cure at the present time, ... -
Creating a better play store for cancer apps by using the meta data. Is the metadata available enough to improve app finding for apps related to cancer?
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-12-15)The current app store is minimalistic and gives a minimum of functionality, there are in principle two options, a list of recommended apps and the search function. Where the search function is as good as the user is able to come up with search words. The question then is; is it possible to create a third party app that works as an overlay and give a more useful result. In order to make the problem ... -
Carbonate concretions in an ice-contact delta, Skarmunken, Ullsfjord, northern Norway
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2017-03-10)At Skarmunken, a small village south of Ullsfjord, northern Troms, Norway, an outcrop containing carbonate concretions have been investigated. From sedimentary logging, five facies (facies A-E) have been classified by their grading and composition. Depositional data from logs, maximum pebble size (MPS) and earlier investigations suggests an ice-contact delta. TOC/TS data have revealed a dominantly ... -
Super-Resolution Imaging of Sub-Mitochondrial Structures using Structured Illumination Microscopy
(Master thesis; Mastergradsoppgave, 2016-05-15)Modern science is based on observation, and its advances are limited by what is possible to observe. For centuries optical microscopy was limited by the diffraction of light, making structures closer together than half the wavelength of light unresolvable. In recent years, the new field of optical nanoscopy has emerged, enabling diffraction-limited structures to be resolved. As opposed to ... -
Vertical nitrate fluxes in the Arctic Ocean
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2017-03-16)Upward mixing of remineralized nutrients is essential for photosynthesis in the upper ocean. Weak vertical mixing, which restricts nutrient supply, and sea ice, which leads to low light levels, conspire to severely inhibit marine primary productivity in the Arctic Ocean. However, little has been known about their relative contributions. No large-scale quantitative estimates of the vertical nutrient ... -
A Data Management Model For Large-Scale Bioinformatics Analysis
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2017-01-18)Bioinformatics has seen an extreme data growth in later years due to the reduction in cost per megabase of sequencing, which today is around 1/400,000th of the cost in 2001. This reduction in cost enables new types of studies, such as searching for novel enzymes in marine environments using metagenomic approaches. However, it also leads to an increase in volume of data, which shifts overall cost ... -
Matsikkerhet i Norge.
Lie-Algebraic Approaches to Highly Symmetric Geometries
(Doctoral thesis; Doktorgradsavhandling, 2017-02-24)We facilitate the exploration and development of geometry by symmetry-based methods. To this end, we answer several natural questions that appear when considering symmetries, for particular examples of geometries -

Statistics of Regional Surface Temperatures after 1900: Long-Range versus Short-Range Dependence and Significance of Warming Trends
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016)This paper studies regional climate variability for the time period 1900–2013 using parsimonious stochastic models. Instrumental data records on 5° × 5°, 2° × 2°, and equal-area grids are examined. A long-range dependent (LRD) stochastic process is used as a simplified description of the multitude of response times in the climate system. Fitting a linear trend to the global mean surface temperature ... -
The origin dependence of the material constants: the permittivity and the inverse permeability
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-05-26)New derivations of origin-independent expressions for the electric permittivity are presented, starting either from the response function of the current density that defines the absorption coefficient, or from the off-resonance single-photon scattering amplitude that leads to the Kramers–Heisenberg dispersion formula. The resulting expression for the permittivity is compared with earlier work ... -
Auto-correlation function and frequency spectrum due to a super-position of uncorrelated exponential pulses
(Peer reviewed; Journal article; Tidsskriftsartikkel, 2017-03)The auto-correlation function and the frequency power spectral density due to a super-position of uncorrelated exponential pulses are considered. These are shown to be independent of the degree of pulse overlap and thereby the intermittency of the stochastic process. For constant pulse duration and a one-sided exponential pulse shape, the power spectral density has a Lorentzian shape which is flat ... -
Open-ended formulation of self-consistent field response theory with the polarizable continuum model for solvation
(Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-11-15)The study of high-order absorption properties of molecules is a field of growing importance. Quantumchemical studies can help design chromophores with desirable characteristics. Given that most experiments are performed in solution, it is important to devise a cost-effective strategy to include solvation effects in quantum-chemical studies of these properties. We here present an open-ended ...
